When Poche is pitching well, you don't start warming a guy up to start an inning. That fricks with some pitchers' minds. The mistake was made when he didn't get someone up immediately after the first runner got on base.

I know that pitching is a very mental game and you have to be careful not to damage fragile psyches. However, if you explain to the starting staff that look, I'm going to start a guy in the 7th just to be on the safe side. It doesn't mean I'm going to yank you. Maybe that minimizes the mind frick, I don't know. I do know that we leave pitchers in for too long in a lot of cases.

que?

The big gripe from last season is that Mainieri didn't leave Bouman in long enough in the Sunday game v. Houston.

Aaron Nola had some ridiculous ERA through the first 6 innings, but he gave up most of his runs in the 7th, 8th, or 9th innings. Yet, Nola would hit the 90 pitch mark or so and CPM would have his bullpen sitting in the dugout spitting sunflower seeds.

Maybe he doesn't know you can get a pitcher warm without actually putting him in the game?

I never said to not have a pitcher down in the pen, ready to get hot on a moments notice.

I didn't say you did.

I'm just muttering to myself. CPM makes me do that.

My question is if you're willing to extend Stallings almost 4 solid IP, then why did we hesitate and/or leave Poche out there to twist in the 7th? The decisions on their faces don't seem to make sense to me.

Stallings hasn't been able to bounce back. So, once you put him out there for 2 innings...you probably are done for the weekend anyway.

That wasn't a decision Mainieri was willing to make in the 7th with a lead. However, apparently, he wasn't willing to put anyone else in there in the 10th.

The real question about Stallings was whether your roll him out there in a tie game.

False. He could have gone Sunday. Again, his issue was with back to back days. I believe he has thrown Wednesday (might have been a Tuesday) and Friday this year.

ETA: He has 10 saves. Not all of them came on weekends.

The answer is no. He's the fricking closer. You can't just assume you're gonna score in the bottom half of the inning.

Especially when you refuse to bunt the runners over when you have 1st and 2nd with zero out in a tie ballgame in the 11th.

I think we can all agree that Nola and Poche are two totally different arms. Nola is able to go after hitters with his stuff, Poche when he tires isn't going to fool many hitters as he plays to contact.

My profile on Lange:
quote:

Alex lead the team in strikeouts this fall and it's no secret why. Along with a power fastball that was consistently between 93-95 mph, Alex has a slider that will fool even the best hitters in the SEC. It's sharp and stays in the 85 mph range. Add in Alan Dunn working to get his changeup as a serviceable third pitch, and we may have our Friday night starter right here. If it weren't for the other freshman pitchers in this class, I would say Alex already has a weekend spot on lock.
This isn't in response to your post. I was looking at my profiles earlier because people don't believe I have positive things to say about our players...
