I don't think people are rooting against you as much as people see the idiots in your profession that constantly splurge like drunken sailors. It's frustrating to see that, and then hear industry types moaning and groaning about being laid off when in the good times they should have been planning for it instead of making idiotic purchases.
interesting take on O&G employee's spending habits. Who decides the definition of

idiotic purchases.
Moreover, who is moaning and groaning? I work in the industry and haven't heard any whining. I have heard concern form those in this field. I have heard many people celebrating the misfortunes of others. Show me an OS worker who losses his "jacked up truck" and I'll show you a broker losing his 5 Series or C class Mercedes. Whats the difference? The fabricator loses his bass boat, the banker losses his summer home. why is one celebrated and one a tragedy?

Here lies the problem, there shouldn't celebrating of people losing their jobs unless they deserve it from things such as criminal reasons.

In general, people are insecure, negative and hateful. They measure themselves against other people and love to see when people fail. This board is a good example of this, basically put people down so they can feel better about themselves. In some cases it's just to validate a life choice or a political stance.

People love success but hate successful people.

Former governor. Clearly this isn't his fault. The blame lies squarely at the wheels of Greg Abbott.

Any man who picks Dan Patrick for his Lt.Gov can't be all bad.

Well, hell. We just laid off a bunch of folks. Very surprised, as we almost never have layoffs.

quote:Frankly I know only 2 people (I'm from Ohio) that have anything to do with the Oil and Gas industry (at least the drilling/refinement process) and they are both engineers. I don't have any major issues with the Oil Companies nor the workers that get paid more than their comparable counterparts in other fields.
What's untrue about that? Read any thread on this topic and it sticks out like a sore thumb. There's no logical reasoning behind laughing at people losing their jobs. It's funny to say "look at there Jim Bob selling his jacked up F250" because he lost his job?
I'd love to get a survey going of what other people in here drive and the cost of those vehicles. People on this site have a hatred for O&G guys, especially ones that work out in the field. The insecurity oozes from their posts.
That being said, I (like most consumers) prefer, and benefit from, these lower prices. I don't like seeing people negatively impacted but I think, oil dependent economies aside, it is a net positive overall.

To be clear, those are both very different from each other and do not have the same effects from low oil prices

I think the bigger worry is that all those smaller companies that were heavily invested in the US shale boom are going to start defaulting on bank loans soon and it will trickle over to the banking industry.
There's been a trend for the past 6 months or so of investors shifting their investments to Europe.
