Oh boy. You're my favorite kind of New Orleanian. No offense, but it's quite a reach to assume that I ever had some aspiration of being viewed as a hip New Orleans insider, much less after living in New York for 10 years. Some of you guys crack me up.

I tried google searching and got a couple sporadic articles from from local organizer groups and a few old Nola.com articles.

The argument is that the elevated freeway section of I-10 over Claiborne has divided the neighborhoods in Treme and the French Quarter.

The highway is elevated.

Elevated.

Meaning, you can easily walk beneath it.

The argument is dumb, but as far as infrastructure goes widening Claiborne and removing that shitty section of I-10 wouldn't be the worst idea. What's great is that it would create a good bit of engineering as I-610 would have to be upgraded and Claiborne itself would need to be upgraded.

I don't understand how eliminating a freeway that you can walk under and widening a street below it (make it wider and harder to cross) unites neighborhoods.

It seems silly, but it's true, and has been true in many parts of the country. The only man-made things more divisive than elevated interstates are canals and interstates at grade. A great example of this concept is Mid-City/Downtown Baton Rouge. Look at one side of I-110 and then look at the other. It's like night and day in most spots despite the fact that one can easily walk under it. It's like that all over the country.

I was speaking of MM not you, was actually agreeing with you on him reaching for words for something he doesn't really understand. No offense taken by me actually think you're one of the more intelligent posters here whether I agree or not with what you say. To me whether NOLA or NYC when visiting I try to do a few things, see the city as a non tourist as much as possible, take it as it is without comparing to others, and leave regional bias at home. Having ttraveled extensively my favorite place is always the one I am at currently with a few notable exceptions in the Mideast and mid America.

Well, one could counterpoint that and tell you to look at the Warehouse District and Lower Garden District. I walk under that bridge all the time to go downtown or into the WD.

Well for one thing, the shelter afforded by the elevated freeway attracts homeless, panhandlers, bums, drifters, and other fun folks with nowhere else to be...

FWIW, this is what it Claiborne looked like before I-10
I don't know how much I'll ever buy into that idea (the social part about dividing neighborhoods). I don't hate eliminating the interstate there as I-610 is a more direct route for people going through the city. US 90 will be renamed or upgraded to I-49 as it comes from the West Bank and back down the bridge to connect up with I-10 by the big pump station.

I get the idea from an engineering standpoint, but I don't buy the "dividing neighborhoods" thing.

There was someone on my facebook (who lives in fecking Florida of all places) who tore this speech to shreds saying that MM was basically saying that NOLA is garbage. Oh he was real mad.

I disagree. Sure I like skiing, but maybe one weekend out of the year. I really don't care for snow. So when talking about living somewhere, I jus could not do it. And I'll enjoy doing outdoor activities in the winter down in the south. I guess shoveling snow is a great way to get outdoors.
