I do know a gentlemen that was under fed investigation for price fixing in the crawfish industry. They were not able to pin anything on him, so I have to assume the industry is clean in that regard.

I thought you were good friends with a crawfisherman If he's honest with you, he'll tell you how.
I'm am in the business and have had a been involved in every aspect of the business from farming to retail.

These fishermen used to all(a large percentage anyway) get together and decide at what price they would begin to pinch the supply at...
The industry has grown way past any group being able to manipulate the price. I don't know if this happened 30 years ago but I know it doesn't today. Was this basin guys or farmers? Farmers are going to fishing as long as it's profitable then they'll drain fields to plant this years crop. Basin guys don't really catch enough to affect the price til very late in the season and that's only if they have good water.

why would it be any different today?
What percent of the fisherman do you think you know? How many pounds were they bringing to the dock every week. Do you really think they were even a small fraction of the total production?

sorry...just saw your post.
these were basin/belle river guys...my friends retired 10 years ago, yet they tell me this still happens...
that being said, one of my best friends Grandma still owns close to half of the ag fields in Duson and her son used to be the primary farmer and crawfish farmer of those rice fields(now she leases it out)
they used to slow fishing as well, but from what I recall they never really mentioned quitting to inflate, but they seemed to stop early every year and we'd go over every weekend while they were draining the fields and literally catch seven or eight sacks just by walking around with a 5 gallon bucket and grabbing the crawfish off the rice stalks that were shading(?) themselves in a matter of 30 minutes...could have easily caught more, but that would be more than we wanted to boil...had great parties throughout high school because of this...

personally, I couldn't tell you how many these few I know represented as a sample % of the # of fishermen Wick
We deer hunted together for a long time...I have no reason to believe that when they tell me they would get together with most of the others and decide how they would work in unison to keep the prices up that it isn't true...nor that they seem to know that it still goes on either.
well I gotta call it a night...I gotta go to work to at 0200
had a friends sister pass away this weekend, but I'll try to respond to any new posts in a timely manner...
