lol at people in here acting like "the letter must be earned". It's a fricking HS varsity letter, not some prestigious rhodes-scholarship type honor.
If it makes the kid happy to wear it, then so be it, let him have his moment.
The people against something like this are probably the peaked in HS guys who still talk about their high school sport playing days.
Nailed it.
My brother has a varsity letter jacket and he tells me that it's nothing more than a jacket in his closet that's a very nice memory of good times when he was a teenager but really doesn't mean much now at this point in his life.
To this special needs kid, it's going to be one of the biggest achievements in life for him and he'll treasure the frick out of it. You're an a-hole if you want to take that away from him.

So on graduation day is this mom going to buy her son the white sash, gold tassel, and proper colored cord that would allow him to be recognized as the valedictorian?
And should the school just let him walk across the stage?

I can't fricking believe so many people are in here defending this.
Why can't the kid wear a letter? He has Down syndrome and the letter probably makes him feel like part of the team and a normal kid.
If it was some JV scrub without special needs its one thing.
I think that EVERY special needs kid who participates or helps out with ANY sport should get a letter regardless wether or not they actually played varsity. Those kids need things like that way more than regular kids

Let the kid be happy and keep the letter. People know that he's probably not a varsity athlete, but who cares?
What if he wanted to be addressed as "Doctor", "General", or "Judge". He probably won't be any of those things, but if it makes him happy what's the big deal?
Any letter man who is offended or feels that his letter has been in some way diminished by this DS kid wearing a letter should probably reassess their masculinity and their ability to show a little compassion to someone less fortunate. My guess is that players on the school's basketball team are delighted that the kid as a letter.
People need to learn to choose their fights wisely.

this. we had a couple kids at our school who were awarded letters, one of them was a manager for us in football/basketball and the other one was basically the water guy.
anyone who gets upset by this didn't play sports in hs and wishes they had a letter. sorry the chess club didn't give you one.

I feel for the mom and the kid, but you shouldn't be able to just buy a varsity letter, even if your kid is "one of a kind and loves to play basketball". The school's not wrong for making him remove the letter, the mom is wrong for buying him one.
Team should vote.. If they vote yes, he gets it.

This. I was quite accomplished in high school and popular, but like I tell my kids, it doesn't make a single shite in the real world. I emphasize it to them and their friends to have fun, do a good job regardless of the task, and don't be shitheads. We had a mentally challenged manager. He was an enthusiastic mf'er. Never bitched about having to do the shittiest jobs(like laundering our nasty shite), was out there rain/sleet/snow and would've cut off both his nuts with a tuna can lid if he could've even been a bench warmer much less a starter. Despite usual school rules the coaches thought he should receive a letter jacket for each sport. They asked us and we all agreed. If anybody had earned it, he had. I have never seen anybody happier. Even as a jack arse 16 yo it brought tears to my eyes to see how damn happy he was over something we'd toss in a closet and forget about as soon a graduation was over. I'm his physician now and he wears that sumbitch to this day and keeps it immaculate. He still smiles ear to ear when he talks about us playing ball together and I'd still punch a mf'er in the mouth for correcting him. Those that treat letter jackets and other high school bullshite like some great and glorious honor expose themselves immediately as has beens and never was's. I'm all for this kid getting one. Perhaps the mom should've asked the coaches first, but it still doesn't make a shite. And it is not the same as some knothead going out and getting one.
ETA-it became pretty standard here for managers to get letter jackets. I know he wasn't a manager, but who gives a shite. Sometimes a participation award is ok. Especially if those that "earned" one are ok with it.

I wouldn't be mad if he had one, but we don't know the tradition of the school. The kid hasn't earned the letter...so it doesn't hurt my feelings they asked.
A lot of schools now just have it where you're a part of a sport for two years you get a letter. Varsity or not.

There are some things that occur on campus that you might have to worry about "precedent" and getting out of control...a special needs student wearing a varsity jacket isn't one of them. What a disgusting story.

I went to HS on the Northshore in the 90s. Our letter jackets had the school's letter on it and we added a gold pin with the sport and bars for the years. There were a couple different kids that were equipment managers for the football, baseball and basketball teams. They were awarded letters by the school... just not the pins.
This is not difficult.
