La to Fla boat run?

has anyone ever tried making a run from the slidell area to navara beach via boat? not a big blue water worthy boat but something that can be trailer back to La behind a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck. i figured it would be fairly safe if you stayed <5 miles out or even within sight of land and kept an eye on the weather. i've been talking this over with some buddies for years but that's all its ever been - talk.
i know it could be dangerous once you get east of mississippi due to the lack of places to duck into from the weather. i figured fuel stops could be made along the mississippi coast and dauphin island.

You could take the ICW

Don't see why it would be a problem. Just pick your days, depending on the boat. Sounds like it would be a fun trip. Would you buy a trailer to bring the boat back? Why not boat it both ways?
ETA: Only 120 miles from the Rigolets to Gulf Shores, looks like there are a bunch of islands you could duck behind in that run. Depending on the boat, may not even have to refuel.

My neighbors run to Biloxi and Orange Beach from my house. These are ~30' cabin cruisers. Just have to watch the weather.

I could think of better ways of doing this. But to each his own

care to elaborate?
my idea was to have wives drive the trailer to navara after we launched at one of the rigolets landings.

why not just drive the boat on the trailer.

A buddy has done it several times in his old 29' Scarab power boat. Yea its doable

The ICW is open in parts (not protected from land), but I make that run all the time. Watch the weather and you should be fine.

Did it twice in a big chaparral when I was growing up. Not sure exactly where in LA that we left out of, but stopped at the grand half way, then ended up in Destin the next day. Had a blast

Super easy boat run with that set-up. 2.5 hr run at 40 mph.

This seems like it would be fun for the first 30 minutes . . .

Know someone who did it in a 42' Bertram. Said they'd never do it again. Granted they did open water and made a multi day trip out of it.

Either the big ditch or fuel up at the former isle of Capri, hit gulf and run east. Be very careful on gulf side of dauphin island, there are some bars way offshore. And don't just duck in anywhere between those islands east DI, you stand a good chance of running aground

Ask the Somali's. They should know.

This is super easy, if you watch the weather.

I know some guys in Atlanta that used to run from Orabge beach to the Bahamas every other year or so. They would stop a different ports along the way and did a good bit of fishing. They always had 2-3 boats and it paid off one year when the made the jump from Florida to the islands. One cat and two CC's. They hit a storm on the crossing and the cat split the hull...the crew quickly jumped over to one of the CC's. They said it happened so fast they were only able to save a little bit of their gear. I always wanted to do it.
