This is what I was told, they are off limits do to reduced nesting areas available from erosion and oil spill B.S. from March to August.
Not saying I follow it but the OP is informed.

I've never heard of this.

However, I have heard of this

quote:

Refuge users should be aware of bird
nesting colonies on the islands. The
colonies are posted with “Area
Closed” signs around them, and the
entering or disturbing of bird
colonies is strictly prohibited.
These provisions supplement the
regulations which govern
recreational uses on national wildlife
refuges set forth in Title 50, Code of
Federal Regulations, Parts 25-32.6.

The fishing is pretty good out there, monster bull reds everywhere. Be extremely careful when it warms up as there are sharks everywhere who aren't afraid of you at all. Oh yea and then there is the sting rays the size of your dining room table. Be extra careful when approaching the islands as there are sandbars everywhere, especially on the gulf side.

On Friday, the federal Fish and Wildlife Service closed the Breton National Wildlife Refuge, including the Chandeleur Islands, to the public, in part “to allow personnel conducting cleanup operations and recovery efforts to work safely and efficiently,” according to a statement.

I was told the islands have not "officially" been reopened, this was by a very nice US game and fish officer. This was last spring - do as you wish.
Again I ignore this and walk and wade where I like, the information is for your use or non-use only.

We have a group that has been talking about doing this for years, so we were going to pull the trigger last year. I called the Brenton National Wildlife office to get details and they were very clear that no camping is allowed on the islands anymore. You can anchor offshore and stay the night, but setting up camp on the island is “Strictly Prohibited”…. Still have not made the trip, but may consider “The Pelican

I've heard similar. Personally don't care much for bull reds, just looking to catch some nice specks and that pompano bite sounds legit. Thanks

Not raining on parade, was just saying that I know people who make a due south trip every year and all they ever talk about is the amount of sharks and lady fish out there. However, they have a blast on the mothership and the facilities are 2nd to none.

Also, be careful running out there, it doesn't take much to run aground.
