Regulated hunting by wealthy visitors is the best way to save elephants, as evidenced partly by the population decline in Kenya after hunting was ceased. But, humans will continue to ignore facts in favor of emotion while Asia turns elephant ivory into trinkets and erection dust.

quote:

African elephants could be extinct in the wild within a few decades, experts warned on Monday at a major conservation summit in Botswana that highlighted an alarming decline in numbers due to poaching.

quote:

In five years, we may have lost the opportunity to save this magnificent and iconic animal." The conference heard latest figures from the International Union for Conservation of Nature, which reported that the African elephant population had dropped from 550,000 in 2006 to 470,000 in 2013.

It's a little bit suspect that an AU fan would start a thread about killing off the entire elephant population in 10 years.

Once they're gone, what majestic creature will white people pay to kill in order to feel adventurous?

The perfect solution is to create economic incentive to conserve these animals which means allowing hunting and other activities. Allow individuals to own and profit from their elephants and the population would be fine.

I don't think a controlled shoot is "adventurous" or what have you. Its really lame, but I'm willing to allow it to save the damn animal as opposed to continuing to allow it to die out.

Emotional response not rooted in a realistic solution to the poaching problem.

Kenya: Ban hunting 40 years ago, elephant numbers decimated
Botswana: Keep hunting in place, elephant numbers increase

Maybe they should let rich people stop hunting them.

Let people hunt the poachers. People would pay big money for that.

And yet those people probably did more to actually help wild elephants by going on those hunts than you will do in your lifetime.

isn't it just astonishing that people hold to their shitty opinions even when presented with hard data to the contrary?
