It's a long video, but it makes a good point. Anyone that's ever been stuck with a traffic ticket they can't pay right away knows the hell it can create in your life.

Southern states are featured prominently.

The Video

He also touches on private probation companies...one of the biggest scams out there.

Thanks for linking it. I'm watching it now. His segment on civil forfeiture is pretty crazy.

I got caught up in that shite in Alabama. Picked up a speeding ticket and an expired tag ticket and I think another mechanical violation. Things were tight at that time having just lost my job, and I couldn't afford to pay the $500 or so in fines.

Went to court, made a good faith payment of about $100 to get on a payment plan which I think was an additional charge of $50 a month and two days community service, made a payment for two months, got in a financial bind again and couldn't make the payment, got my license suspended and jailed until I could barter and beg enough money from friends to pay the whole sum -- took two days.

After that, I had to pay another several hundred dollars to get my license reinstated.

All told, I think the total ended up being about $1,200 but it's been a while.

ETA: And while I was on the payment plan I was on probation which meant weekly to twice a week drug screenings which included alcohol. They cost $15 a shot and any bad test meant another visit to probation, an additional fine and more community service.

It's probably one of the best researched shows on TV. I love it.

That was infuriating.

Like Scruffy said before, cops are fricking tax collectors and once they get their hands on you, the system bleeds you dry.

I can't even imagine the hours some of those writers or interns must put in to develop the 'storyline' (for lack of a better word) of his main arguments. But I tune into watch every week.

I like how they spend $3500 or whatever incarcerating someone to enforce a $160 fine. Retarded.

Why should he offer solutions? Last I checked, we have a bunch of think tanks and universities and senators and representatives that are paid to do that shite.

ETA: And the NCAA issue probably isn't the best example seeing as there is an obvious solution (pay the players) but the universities and NCAA are highly reluctant to change.
