I'm 41 and have been a soccer nut since age 4. The growth in my lifetime has been way beyond what I imagined. It used to be I could see an nasl game on TV maybe twice a year. Usually a ft lauderdale game for some reason. Networks never showed the national team. It was always huge even when I was playing lpysa. Even then soccer was the biggest youth participation sport. But coaching was, well some kids dad who grew up playing baseball and basketball.

Then we hosted the world cup and everything changed. Between hosting, mild surviving and now thriving, improved coaching and youth development and soccer being everywhere (it's huge for a kid to be able to watch la liga and epl) the improvement has been amazing.

From John obrien at Ajax to the success of Donavan and Beasley et al at the youth then full national team level to the promise of Freddy adu and now us having youth at top academies across Europe the talent has improved so much. And I think the athletes at the national team level are better than ever (let's be honest, Dodd and Lalas weren't incredible athletes).

On top of that we have SAMs army who can make its impact on a game and the atmosphere they bring to the stadium. It's amazing to see the support we have now. People care about soccer.

So all that leads me to believe that yes we will compete and probably make a final in my lifetime (hoping for 12 more cups). Wish Fifa hadnt fricked us cause usa deserves to host. Hopefully I can attend final in usa to watch our national team compete in 2026.

I think we can compete with anyone, it just depends on which team shows up that day.

And we've beaten several top teams, both in tourneys and friendlies. I remember listening to talk sport the day after we lost to Belgium and the English commentators were flat out scared of what we were becoming (and lamenting how England was going the other way). Its gonna happen, we'll get hot and FINALLY the ball will bounce our way.

I do not disagree with that. We are making good strides. It will just take generations.

The advantage we have over other countries that have large populations (China, India, etc) is that the caliber of athlete a nation needs to be a world power is already here. They just play other sports, for the most part. No one produces athletes like we do. Also, the potential for growth of any sport, not just soccer, is much higher here than anywhere else in the world. There's just so much room to grow.

I believe the quote I read went something along the lines of "we need more of our shortstops, running backs, and point guards to turn into midfielders and forwards"

If soccer continues to grow here, then a few of our destined to be star athletes will be soccer players from the get-go.

Athleticism is God-given. You can enhance your abilities through working out, but you're either athletic or you aren't. We have better athletes as a nation than anyone else. It's just that our Patrick Petersons and Julio Jones grow up playing another sport. I dont think that'll ever change, but I do feel like a few guys with that type of God given athleticism will eventually be soccer players from the beginning. It's a matter of numbers. The more kids that focus on soccer, the higher the chance that a few of them will be world class athletes.

And I know technical ability outweighs athleticism on the pitch, but the athletic freaks with technical ability are precious commodities. I think the day will come when the U.S. is considered a powerhouse, just don't know when that'll be.

When we learn to develop technical players in our own country and really start devoting serious resources to the sport.

When you compare those resources to what other top countries are working with, I would bet we are far behind.
