Think I'm going to take the wife to Portland for her 40th. She loves waterfalls and has never been to that area. Was wondering if it is best to stay in Portland or fly in and then stay somewhere around Mt. Hood, probably Timberline Lodge. Will fly in on Thursday and out Sunday. This will be the end of April first of May, so hopefully the weather will be pretty good.
Figured we could do the Gorge/Waterfalls and Mt Hood, and then maybe go down to Eugene to some of the wineries.
Thanks for any info.

A few of us on FDB will be up the May 8-11, so let us know how it goes. Thanks.

Stock up on wagon wheels and oxen. Don't get dysentery

Is there any way you can extend the trip? A long weekend is not much time to see a place you've never been. I would add a drive out to see the coast, but it sounds like you won't have time for that. If I only had time for one thing, I would go to Mt Hood, I guess.

Stay in Portland so that you can get to the Columbia Gorge (where some of the waterfalls are) and also get to Hood (which is in the other direction). Each is about a 90 minute drive from downtown.

White Salmon/Hood River ain't too bad. Wineries, breweries, and a decent kiteboarding/windsurfing spot. About an hour east of Portland.

They have wonderful people there, mostly white who like to drink beer and wine.

A guy who posts in the nightly beer thread, Jax-Tiger, lives in Portland. You should pop in there and hit him up.

Take a day trip to Cannon Beach (where The Goonies was filmed). It's great.

Was thinking of taking her to King Estates Winery, she loves their pinot.

I went last August. Stayed at The Allison and visited about a dozen wineries. Our favorite two were Youngberg Hill and Utopia. They are mom and pop type places. Dan owns Utopia, gives the presentation, rings you up, etc.

Cross your fingers. You have about a 50/50 shot on this one. The weather in the PNW doesn't start to become consistently nice until about late June/early July. Although we've had a really nice winter.

Willamette Wineries
Check out Solena that's my favorite.
Definitely check out Multnoma falls. I'd say drive out to Pacific city to check out the Oregon coast and find a hike out to the Pacific there's some great 2-6 mile round trip hikes that are amazing.
Last time I was there in May we had a couple days of rain, it was the usual high of 65 low of 50 overcast type weather with a couple really nice sunny days mixed in.
Long pants light jacket, lots of micro climates in the area so be prepared to layer for Mt. Hood vs. wineries vs. Oregon coast.

If you want waterfalls, drive from Portland down to Salem. Then east to Silver Falls State Park. You won't be disappointed.

He won't have time for that or going to the coast if he wants any time out of the car.
OP...good luck on good weather. Bring your rain coat.
King Estates is quite the drive from Portland on a 3 day trip.

Gorge area is not a 90 min drive from downtown. The first hike is exit 28 and Multnomah falls is exit 31 of 84. 45 min tops from downtown.
