However, Liverpool manager Rodgers, whose side are five points behind fourth-placed United after the defeat, was quick to leap to the defence of his centre-half.

Rodgers told BBC Sport: “I have seen the Martin Skrtel incident. The ball was played through but it probably looks worse in slow motion.

“It looks like he is trying to get a nick on the ball, to get a toe on it the ball went into the goalkeeper’s hands. Martin is not that type of player, he was just a fraction out.”

Those years under Jose must have rubbed off on BR

if he doesn't get a 3 match ban Jose's campaign against chelsea will be in full motion again.

Meh - could be intentional, but his foot has to go somewhere and it did not kick further out or go in an unnatural direction in order to get ddg. Probably should get suspended, but the intent is difficult to judge on this one imo. He had a defender brushing the side of him and a keeper sliding towards him. I think he's more guilty of not doing enough to avoid it rather than purposely stomping. Which should likely get a ban anyway.

Very unlike the Stevie g stomp where he had to kick out in order to stomp.

Not a fan of the term stamp. Seems so british. If you are England that's one thing. But if a guy in a bar in Baton Rouge uses it it comes across as odd.

Nothing like Stevie G's stomp. I can't tell if it was intentional or not. It looked like something that happens in the course of play. Lots of obvious intentional shite went on in that match, but that didn't look bad at all to me.

Skrtel has been a rock for us this year, but for me the stamp is inexcusable. I see what Rodgers is doing here, but I still think Skrtel should see retroactive punishment, as unfortunate as that will be for us. He needs to control himself. There have been a few challenges this year where he has been lucky not to have resulted in penalty kicks.

Skrtel's not as bad as Stevie Gs but again it was the end of the game, he could have just been tired.

More than likely it was frustration and a lack of control and he'll get his ban. Skrtel isn't a dirty player, shite happens when you're tired and pissed off.

I'll accept whatever punishment or lack of punishment he gets.

Why do you think so? Dude has a pretty good discipline record.

I think he gets unfair due because of the way he looks. I'm a bit bias but I'd like to know.

The Football Association have charged Martin Skrtel with violent conduct following Sunday's game with Manchester United at Anfield.

The charge relates to an incident with David De Gea towards the end of the game where Skrtel appeared to stand on the United keeper’s leg.

If found guilty, the Liverpool defender could face a three-game ban - the same punishment given to Chelsea striker Diego Costa, who was retrospectively found guilty of stamping on Liverpool's Emre Can during a Capital One Cup clash against Liverpool in January.
