You see smart coaches do it all the time. They call timeout (Johnny keeps those handy) and ask the ref to review how much more time should be added to the clock on a booth replay after a basket is made at the very end of regulation. A smart coach should give his players every opportunity to succeed and not get caught up in all of the drama that is going on during the game. Scroll down that link and look at the loop of the last shot made by N.C. State. Even if you can't get the refs to put time back on the clock, don't you AT LEAST ask? They might have even put .7 and maybe we could try a catch and shoot. Who knows? Not Johnny nor you or I because he chose to do NOTHING. I really do think our coach gets complacent sometimes and this is just one more example. He needs to keep getting good talent until his COACHING abilities catch up with them, but until then we will have to rely on talent alone.

Wouldnt have made a difference. Accept that the team laid an egg in the second half and move on. We weren't going to make it far because tournament teams don't consistently have scoring droughts of 10 minutes or more

So we have no one on the bench that can score? That is on the coach for recruiting these players that can't get into the game. Even Trent had players he could sub in.

You may like to put blame on teenagers, but I'm putting blame on the 50 year old making a butt load of money to put a team together.

He's in year 3 and only has 6 players worthy of playing time. Yeah let's keep bashing the players.

Absolutely. Do something. What if there was a goal tending and Coach Jones didn't call a timeout that would allow the refs to review the play? It was too close for Jones to have known for sure that it wasn't.

If anything calling a timeout there allows the refs to put the clock to at least .3 seconds where something is possible. At .1 nothing is really possible.

Make free throws and this thread wouldn't even exist. Maybe he doesn't make them practice free throws enough or something but missed free throws lost this game in the end. You can't miss that many free throws and expect to win anything.

The worst part was that after Martin grabbed the ball from the made basket, he and everyone looked at Jones who just blankly stared back at them. He had already given up. There isn't a credible coach at any level who doesn't call a timeout there.

Coach Jones seems to have zero ability to think ahead in situations. After the shot went in it was like he needed a few seconds to think about "What do we do now?"

The only reason for that is because NC State missed shot after shot at the end as well. You seriously can't imagine a scenario where the other team hits a go ahead basket in the last second of the game? Do you really like the fact that Jones just freezes up like he did?

Or maybe in you opinion Coach Jones was thinking "Screw these guys. They missed all those free throws. They don't deserve to win. I sure as Hell am not going to call any timeouts to bail them out."

Are players not allowed to call time-out? This team has a very low basketball IQ and no game awareness ... I attribute that to the staff.

You know you can't review basket interference right?

Art. 3. The officials shall not use such available equipment for judgment calls such as:
a. Determine whether a foul occurred. (Exceptions: A flagrant 2 foul.)
b. Determine whether basket interference or goaltending occurred.
c. Determine whether a violation occurred except in 11-2.1.e and 11-3.1.a.2.

I thought that wasn't reviewable? At least that is what they said during the UCLA game

Didn't know that. Thank you. Maybe it was / is in the NBA?

In any event, the original reason (to get time put back on the clock) stands. Do you think cJJ should not have called a timeout there. Does anyone?

I was baffled that he didn't take a timeout at the end.

I mean, he never takes them. And he's a bad in-game coach. But damn. Someone on the bench has to take one, right?
