I'm building my first computer that I want to use for some gaming. What are some good games? If it's multiplatform I'd still prefer to play on my Xbox. I may be interested in something like Civ 5. I don't really know much about it other than when I saw it I thought it might look cool.

Any tips I should know or a certain game that graphically blow me. What would convert a console lover into a master racer or whatever you call yourselves

Skyrim with nexus mods is always a great graphical intro to PC

You didn't need to build a rig to play Civ 5. It runs well on my laptop. And yeah it's great.

There is a big PC thread up above. I think since PC gaming is so big and diverse, there's no single "killer app" that all PC gamers must have. What kind of games do you like, PC has them all. I love how the Steam store is set up - lets you navigate different categories and the "community" discussions are integrated.

Oh yeah I forgot about steam, I'll have to check that out.

Skyium is a good suggestion that maybe one of the first things I try out actually. Can you just turn up graphics in game or do you download mods from somewhere? Would you have to pay for them or is that kind of stuff free

You can turn up graphics, but the engine is dated and vanilla skyrim isn't all that impressive anymore, so the high-res texture mods on Nexus would be the minimum to start with. And all of the Nexus mods are free.

So yeah. Get a Steam account, download the Steam client. It's free. Then just check out the store, it's like shopping on amazon. You can sort by any category you can think of, read reviews, get recommendations, etc. Then you just click on what you wanna buy and it downloads to your computer and you play it. It's amazing!

Awesome thanks. I'm still waiting on my parts that I hoped to have by Friday but it doesn't look like it's happening

Skyrim is the "This is what you've been missing" example for PC. It was my first realization too. I played Skyrim on 360, put about 50 hours and got bored. Then I built a PC and got Skyrim and I literally downloaded 4 more mods yesterday and still play to this day. If you built something good enough to run all of the graphical enhancements and a decent ENB, your life will never be the same.

This is when I was hooked.

depends your tastes, but there are so many great games you can get for next to nothing.

don't be an idiot. Assuming your building a legit PC, any xbox game will look better on pc and you can use a controller if you want. PC games are also cheaper.

Civ 5

I have three games currently on my totally non-gaming laptop: Morrowind, NR2003, and Civ 4.

Missed this little gem. Your PC will have a 4790K and a GTX 970. Other than playing certain online games with your Xbox friends, why on earth would you prefer the xbox?

EDIT: I assume you know that you can use an Xbox controller on your PC?

I built a rig when I played in CAL for Counter-Strike years ago... it smoked. But that was years ago and now it's obsolete

What mod is that? I've toyed around with hundreds of mods, but never seen anything like that.

That's probably realvision ENB with all the recommended mods. It's an ENB file with list of around 30-40 graphics and environment mods that cover essentially everything in skyrim except NPCs. I ran that for a while. It's nice, and I still run pretty much all of the suggested mods, but for the ENB side, most of those are really only fun for screenshots. I never liked to play with any of those lens flare/sunbeam-happy ENB settings.

The water in the screenshot is probably "Realistic Water Two" and the rocks are probably part of a high-res landscape mod.

I misspoke when I said multi-platform. But some of the bigger titles with multi-player I imagine Ill want to play with my friends on xbox. Mainly fps and titles I have already started on my xbox(achievements right?).

Yeah I know I can hook up my controller to my pc( they are supposed to add wireless support for the controllers soon? or is that already a thing) and I know than everything on the pc will look amazing compared to the xbox. those skyrim pics are incredible.

Ill try any game. When my friends played wow i did the week free trial and it wasnt for me. I dont mind mmorpgs but I dont think I would invest that much time into one. Ill enjoy skyrim so that might be the first game I get since I've never played through it. Besides shooters and ncaa games I stick with assassins creed/arkham knight/shadow of mordor type games. Ive been browsing through steam and they have some awesome deals. Ill pick up the mass effect series. Ive only played the second one all the way through.

Probably an ENB with lighting mods. I had a few that were about that severe but my FPS dipped in combat. Most of those aren't even playable above 25 FPS unless you're dropping like 2k into a rig. Good for taking screenshots, though.

Once you get used to playing FPS on PC with kb/mouse, you won't be able to stand using a controller for FPS games.

Those ENB mods only look that amazing on image stills.
