While Microsoft has dropped hints that the Internet Explorer brand is going away, the software maker has now confirmed that it will use a new name for its upcoming browser successor, codenamed Project Spartan. Speaking at Microsoft Convergence yesterday, Microsoft’s marketing chief Chris Capossela revealed that the company is currently working on a new name and brand. “We’re now researching what the new brand, or the new name, for our browser should be in Windows 10,” said Capossela. “We’ll continue to have Internet Explorer, but we’ll also have a new browser called Project Spartan, which is codenamed Project Spartan. We have to name the thing.”

Internet Explorer will still exist in some versions of Windows 10 mainly for enterprise compatibility, but the new Project Spartan will be named separately and will be the primary way for Windows 10 users to access the web. Microsoft has tried, unsuccessfully, to shake off the negative image of Internet Explorer over the past several years with a series of amusing campaigns mocking Internet Explorer 6. The ads didn’t improve the situation, and Microsoft’s former Internet Explorer chief left the company in December, signalling a new era for the browser.

Capossela also detailed the power of using the Microsoft brand over just Windows or Internet Explorer, and showed off some research data on a new name for the company’s browser vs. Internet Explorer. Putting Microsoft in front of the new secret name increased the appeal to some Chrome users in the UK. “Just by putting the Microsoft name in front of it, the delta for Chrome users on appeal is incredibly high,” says Capossela.

Microsoft is clearly testing names with market research, but it’s unclear when the company plans to unveil the final name for its Internet Explorer successor. Judging by Microsoft’s own research, it’s obvious the company will move as far away from Internet Explorer as possible, and it’s likely Project Spartan will have the Microsoft name attached to it.

Elsewhere in Capossela’s talk, the Microsoft executive also discussed the ways the company will make money in future, and clever ways the company is making use of social media. Microsoft has started to use artists to respond to Twitter users with personalised images, and at least one from the Xbox team was successful at creating attention with an impressive 35,000 retweets. It’s all part of improving Microsoft’s brand perception, and a general admission from the company that it’s ready to be loved again.

Smart move, should've done it years ago. The Internet Explorer brand has been irredeemable for a long time regardless of improvements.

Spartan will have to be tremendously different for people to look at it as anything other than the New IE.

And if it is tremendously different, people will hate it for being different.

They have no one to blame but themselves. Firefox is no longer the be all or end all, either, but I got used to it back when it was - by far - the best full-featured browser. But I was desperate fairly early - I went from Netscape Navigator (yeah, buddy, I'm old - wanna fight about it?), to Opera to Firefox - I've been with Firefox since about 0.6 - so that tells you the time I've invested in learning how it works and how to make it work.

I ONLY use IE for work.

I actually need to start making my conversion over to Firefox from chrome sometime, I just never "want" to. Firefox is actually really good now, I've been very impressed with it (I use it exclusively at work).

Ha. My progression was NN, IE, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and now Safari. I still use Chrome from time to time for Flash. I used Opera the longest. Chrome was such a godsend though when it first came out.

Ironically, IE on Windows 8.1, at least on the SP3, is IMO the best browser in terms of design and responsiveness.

This is a mistake IMHO. The have a well known brand that is still one of the most well known and popular browsers. They should rebuild it from the ground up, test it extensively with a widespread beta roll-out and re-brand it. I mostly use Chrome but there is at least one online bill pay website that I use that only works correctly with Internet Explorer.

HA, fricking HA!

I hate it, in spite of improvements, because I'm forced to use it for our Microsoft POS Dynamics CRM, and the crappy integration it has with Outlook.

My inept IT dept. now will have to figure out what to do. Maybe they'll scrap Dynamics altogether and go with Salesforce, which is my favorite CRM.

29, and Netscape was my first browser. It's funny to think that internet browsers used to be installed from floppy disks. After netscape, it was AOL. My parents were AOL subscribers for a long time. There was a brief period of IE, and I still use it at work when I'm actually in the office. But I was almost exclusively firefox for over a decade until switching to all-chrome in 2014.

Yeah, you may miss Microsoft when you go this route. We are moving to SalesForce now and let me say they have issues internally.

Interesting you went from Firefox to Opera - Opera was great for me for a very long time, but a couple of version changes really slowed it down - it was a blisteringly fast, compact browser back in the bad old days (what Chrome purports to be now) - and I was looking for an alternative. My hipster, rebel IT guy at the time (he was a 21 year old who knew everything - and, honestly, he was way, way ahead of his time on lots of things - a brilliant kid) - turned me on to Firefox and I haven't looked back. I even used Thunderbird for many years before they broke that.

I don't use any Microsoft products voluntarily, other than the office suite and movie maker (even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then, right? But, to give credit those are quality pieces of software) - I actively seek alternatives to using the pieces built into the OS. My son insists that I would be better off on Google (Chrome?) OS for desktop, but I've resisted.
