We brought in Ireland to help change the way we've been approaching the draft. His first year here and we have more picks than we've had since 2002. I think the type of player we look at may change too.

As for positions, year to year that changes based on BPA when you pick with some influence based on your needs (if we have a CB and a LB rated about the same we'll go with the LB for instance). Saying we've never done x means we'll never do x is bullshite. Plus like I said we brought in Ireland to help change our approach.

If Ireland and the team have a knockout draft hiring him will be one of the best moves Loomis has made.

Exactly! Spot on!

Why is everything about sean payton and the past? Loomis and a bunch of assistants and scouts have more input that whatever Payton dreams up

Ironic that you mention being lucky/good at evaluating olineman and Charles Brown in the same post

I think with the moves we have made this season I think SP and Loomis admit that their old style isn't working anymore. With all the moves we have made, nothing would surprise me.

I wouldn't be surprised if we traded back and got another 2nd rounder for this year and a first next year just by trading back in the first. Nothing will surprise me at this point.

Using the past as judgement for the upcoming draft is stupid. Variables, needs, and wants are far different than ever before.
You can certainly tell it's off season in this forum.

This makes the most sense. No matter what happens with Brees and his contract next off-season, the team will have to get our next QB. Getting an extra 1st rounder allows you to move up to grab a QB in the early picks.

Collins hasn't even been contacted by the Saints yet.

I was told last year on here by one of our local radio producer's that since Sean Payton has never drafted a WR under 6' in the 1st round, we weren't going to pick Cooks last year.

Yet they never met with Cooks before taking him....so, there's that.

I do agree with Bone to an extent. Ireland was brought in to change the way the college scouting was going. Something wasn't working. They now have more picks than this regime has ever had in one draft and are still signing at positions of need.

IMO, they are looking at (LB, OL, WR, DB), in that order. If they choose to use all the picks (the top 3 of them), then it will depend on their value chart. I would imaging there will be a top LB, OL, or WR at 13 and can pick up good value in one of the other positions at 31 and 44.

I think they will take an OLineman with one of the two first round picks. I think which one depends on if an unexpected player is still there at 13.

Doesn't mean anything. They blew a 1st round pick on Cooks and they never talked to him.

Collins is more than just a plug and play at OG, he's an insurance policy for every position on the interior, except Center.

But, deep down, I have a suspicion that they're going to package #13 an #31 and draft something completely off he wall.

I guess in your professional assessment, with the glaring deficiencies on defense last year, and those deficiencies being almost ignored in last years draft,in hind site , trading up for a WR was the right call.

We were the #4 defense in the NFL in 2013 and added Jairus Byrd last offseason. Only significant loss was Greer, and they drafted a guy that they thought would replace him with their second pick.

This.

If SJB was able to contribute in just sub packages this past season, our draft would have looked a lot better. But he didn't. Add that to the fact that last years WR class was ridiculously deep, you can say we should have gone D in the 1st then get a WR in the 2nd or later when you look back on it.

Cooks was a legit pick when we took him and will be big time for us next season. But since SJB was passed up by UDFA rookies and only played 8 snaps on D, you can sit there and say "Cooks was a bad pick in the 1st" and " we should have gone defense there". And yea that is a valid point.

But it's not Cooks fault that SJB wasn't the guy we thought he could be. Cooks was going in the 1st round last year, probably before our originial draft slot which is why we traded up. You can't say that we blew that pick by drafting Cooks just because we saw how it played out with SJB his rookie year.

If SJB was able to get on the field and be in the rotation, you wouldn't be saying we blew the pick on Cooks. Because we didn't blow the pick on Cooks. SJB was the pick we messed up on, not Cooks.

Don't you think losing Sproles and LMoore had a little something to do with it

I think losing Sproles hurt but there was no question teams where starting to bottle him up more.

could he still be effective had he stayed? Probably. But he wasn't going top be the matchup nightmare like he was in 2011 for us.

he did prove to still be a good return man in Philly which kinda already told us something we knew about our own return game.

its just not that good.
