It will be out of character for Sean. He's never taken an OL in the first. He's only picked one as high as the second, Charles Brown.

We've either been lucky or damn good at evaluating those linemen.

He's never needed to.

Also 31 would be the perfect spot to grab a guard like A.J. Cann if we don't grab Scherff or Collins earlier.

ya, I like the 31 or 44 pick for a guard.

...don't think Scherff will be there at #13.

Browns got Joel Bitonio at #35 last year

We've mostly had stable lines, limiting the necessity for Payton to do it. Strief has had RT locked up for 8 seasons. Evans has been an overall superb RG for 9 seasons. Nicks dominated at LG for 4 years, then we replaced him with Grubbs who gave us a solid 3 years. Bushrod was a good enough LT from 2009-2012 after replacing the very solid Jammal Brown whom Payton had inherited.

All of that leaves center as the only position where we've had some serious turmoil, but you typically see at most 1 center drafted in the first round. It's not that Payton is averse to drafting a first round OL, it's just that he hasn't had to. He's not going to force it if he isn't in love with a guard available at 13 or 31, but I'd bet that he'll be ecstatic if Scherff is available at 13.

By that logic, that means the pick will have to be one of the WRs, Gordon/Gurley, Shelton, or Waynes.

After all, SP has only drafted DBs (3) RBs (2), WRs, (2), DT (1), or DE (1) in his career.

I am fairly sure they will wither take a pass rusher or a WR at 13... I agree with you. Taking an OL in the top 20 is not their style.

Why is everything about sean payton and the past? Loomis and a bunch of assistants and scouts have more input that whatever Payton dreams up. This team is obviously under construction and no telling what is to come. Only two guys on the team are untradeable. All bets are off

I doubt that.

I 100% agree. I see us grabbing Ali Marpet in the 2nd round. He is a pure beast at Guard.

Ok. I disagree, but that's cool. I think he'd be a bit of a reach at 31, but not an extreme one, and a solid pick 44.

what about the guard from Duke... Tomlinson?

he looked pretty tough at the Senior Bowl. Usually D-lineman tee off on the O-line during the week. I'm not real sure why but it seems like it happens just about every year.

for instance, Danny Shelton had his way with the North O-line in his 1-on-1's

but the one guy who held his own against him was Tomlinson

could any of you guys see us taking him in the 2nd round?

I think we'll take some one off all of our radars in the 1st round. That's usually what happens. Like Vaccaro for example. A few people had us taking Cooks last year though I think.

I like Tomlinson a lot...that's the better value later on, imo.

Take an impact LB or WR at #13, then get Tomlinson if possible

I do like Tomlinson. I like Cann a little more but I'd be fine with either one. We'd have to take either by 44 tho or were not getting them.

We brought in Ireland to help change the way we've been approaching the draft. His first year here and we have more picks than we've had since 2002. I think the type of player we look at may change too.

As for positions, year to year that changes based on BPA when you pick with some influence based on your needs (if we have a CB and a LB rated about the same we'll go with the LB for instance). Saying we've never done x means we'll never do x is bullshite. Plus like I said we brought in Ireland to help change our approach.

If Ireland and the team have a knockout draft hiring him will be one of the best moves Loomis has made.
