In Jones final session with the media, caught this gem....

quote:

hese other guys will have an opportunity to continue to grow up as players and especially with the recruiting class we have coming in with the likes a Ben Simmons who has won every award out there imaginable. From the Naismith to the Gatorade, you name it. He has been top player in the country. We look forward to his services the and the other guys that will be following him that will be able to bond as close and as quick as these guys were able to after Johnny O’Bryant III left

plural "guys" as in LSU is bringing in another croot

In the latest version of beyond the game he talks about his recruiting and doesn't seem to have a timetable for an announcement. He said he wants to take his officials in the next coming weeks, but that he has a full month with all American game, Jordan classi, and Nike summit all in April.

Yea but Victor is already on the team and isn't a recruit. He's not trying to sign Victor and saying Victor wants to come here because of Benny. Although I think he was talking in generalities and maybe not specifically about Malik, it's clear they expect to sign another player with Simmons and Blakeney. And I get the feeling by saying guys want to come here to play with Simmons, that at the worst, we'll sign a 4-star if we miss Malik (which we aren't!).

Yeah I'm skeptical of most writers who claim to have "insider information" on basketball recruiting, given how hard it is to come by. I can respect that Sonny and Shea don't pretend to be something they're not

With that said, Meyer actually has deep rooted ties in basketball recruiting. Considering what his sources think about Newman's signature, I don't see how Ben Howland suddenly eliminated LSU

Jones has proven to be a pretty good recruiter, but let's not pretend this incoming class isn't a benefit of circumstance. Simmons doesn't even look at LSU if Patrick is not on the coaching staff. Blakeny doesn't show interest if Simmons isn't already on board; LSU isn't nearly as appealing to Newman if Simmons and Blakeny pledged their signatures. Simmons was the first necessary domino to fall that brought about this potential class

However, Newman isn't going play with that crappy roster at MSU just because Ben Howland signed up. Howland is a good coach and a good hire for MSU, but it's just a little bit easier to recruit great players to a historic basketball powerhouse located in a beautiful part of the 2nd largest city in America than it is to recruit players to a SEC "also ran" in a remote part of Mississippi.

Well duh. I'm also not going to disregard the fact he landed Mickey, Martin, and Quarterman, then beat out Thad Matta for Elbert Robinson

Yeah, I don't see why Newman would want to help MSU become a better NIT team. The SEC is going to be pretty damn good next season, so there's no chance they make the NCAA tournament

So, the circumstance is David Patrick being on staff? Didn't Jones hire him?

We've got an open staff position. Time to hire the godfather of the top recruit for '16

Didn't Johnny Jones create the beneficial circumstances or are you saying it was just blind luck?

To me, this is just how recruiting works (e.g. Saban got Landon Collins because of his girlfriend).

Don't forget jones was a pretty damn good recruiter as an assistant. It took lester Earl lying for the NCAA to give LSU any reason to let him go.
