I remember watching a film when I was about 10 or so with my parents. However, I have struggled to recall any of the actors in the film.

Here is the gist of the plot:

A veteran FBI agent/detective brings in some violent criminal. As the criminal is being brought to his cell, he manages to steal a gun from one of the guards and blows his brains out.

This particular incident really fricks with the agent/detective. He is contemplating retirement but decides to take a case in what I remember being the Pacific Northwest. There has been a slew of child molestations and murders.

He winds up going to investigate the community where everything has been taking place and winds up falling for this single mother who has a young daughter. After questioning a number of individuals, he gets a hunch that the son of a local priest (who is a youth minister of sorts) is the possible perpetrator.

He arranges some sort of meeting between the priest's son and the aforementioned woman's daughter at a park. This is obviously a trap being set up with the young girl acting as the bait.

However, the meeting never takes place and the agent/detective's cohorts believe he has lost his touch or that the priest's son was aware of the ploy at hand.

One of the final scenes of the film shows the agent/detective driving past a fatal car crash with an big rig and a car. The car appears to be that of the priest's son.

Does anyone have any idea what the hell movie I am half-arse describing?

Holy shite TideSaint, you just cured years of frustration!

I feel ashamed that I couldn't remember Jack Nicholson being in the film.

Probably mixing up the plots with the one about the 4 friends who had priest problems when they were in school together... Matt Damon movie, I think.
