Change of Pace - Superdome Stadium Replacement?

Since the Saints are in the forefront in March with all the moves, some talk among buds a few days ago was about a Superdome replacement, if it came to that. The consensus was it had to be downtown, and the only place we could think of was the large grassy field along the river between the Bridge and the old power plant (the smokestacks) - next to the Convention Center.
My thought was the stadium wouldn't fit, but using the Google maps measuring tool, the Superdome footprint (larger than most new football only stadiums) would easily fit there. A quick Google Earth check shows a lot of old industrial and parking lots - and those apartments built after Katrina.
I could easily see an open, but covered stadium for the sun (like Seattle's), with the open end to the river. Still walking distance to all the hotels, parking garages, restaurants and bars, and you could have a new Champions Square, and even use the Convention Center for indoor game day events when no conventions were in town.
In many ways, I see it being a better location than the Dome. Ships (that fit under the bridge) could dock on the river 100yds from the stadium during Super Bowl. The NFL Experience would be adjacent to the Stadium. The Riverfront Streetcar could shuttle fans from downriver right to the stadium steps. And think of in 10 or so years, the sheer number of people living withing walking distance of the stadium at that site.
While the Dome is still a great place for football, I do think it's an impediment to getting another Super Bowl because it's age is used against it. And maybe the Superdome site would be better served with a new City Hall or medical structure.
I'm sure the Saints will be in the Dome for the foreseeable future, but I think somehow the state or city needs to purchase that parcel to maintain the land just in case. If it gets developed, then the only three areas left for a new stadium would be the Dome site (meaning a move to Tiger Stadium for 2 years, not optimal), NO East or Algiers (too far from downtown).
The only other remote alternative would be the soon to be vacated VA Hospital / Charity Hospital area. That would require a LOT of demolition and traffic flow there would be terrible. There are not a lot of good options, and while the Dome has been a good old friend, I think NOLA needs to think big going forward.
Its like making a will, you know what's coming, and you have plan for it. If not, we may be in a situation where we could lose the team in 10-15 years.

developers have been trying to put a hotel in that space for years

Nice ideas but the state can't meet it's budget for years. Allocating money for a new stadium while higher ed and healthcare are going through big time cuts would not be very popular

That spot by the convention center really IS the only place left within walking distance of downtown/the Quarter.
However, I believe in the last year it was sold to developers. Actually, I want to say that an extension of the Convention Center is planned to go there. Benson should have grabbed that land years ago.

I heard we are trying to package Grubbs with the Superdome to pick up another draft pick.

An outside stadium would be miserable

What if Bree's restructured his contract too????

Traffic would be a bigger PITA there, but a closer bike ride for me.

No.
They just spent hundreds of millions of dollars renovating it and adding new features to it and now it's one of the more nicer and state of the art stadiums in the NFL. It's not going anywhere for 20-25 more years at the least.

I hope it wasn't sold. That's not to say whoever bought it wouldn't sell it to the state for a profit, but there is eminent domain. As for an extension of the Convention Center, I think that business is shrinking overall and there are too many big convention centers in the US. A stadium would be the best use for that land.
I am just concerned if we sit on the Dome too long then we run out of other options. AND if the state or city can't pony up, then there are other states and cities that will. Everything is driven by money.
In the end, what will happen - one day - is that the Dome will come down, the Saints will move to Tiger Stadium for 2 years, and a new stadium will rise in its place. But is that the best option?

This is not true.

I just pulled this off of Google. I was trying to find a website that I saw a while ago that had a couple of proposed sites/drawings for a new stadium. Pretty sure that's supposed to be the Mississippi to the left. Hopefully it doesn't rain...

I'm positive it was sold. Because I've thought about this land for a future stadium as well. I'll see if I can dig up a link.
ETA: LINK
ETA again: That artist's rendering, I believe, was when it was proposed to put a stadium in Algiers.

There's going to come a day when the Superdome will have to be replaced, I just hope that this isn't the solution. Although, I have none better to offer

Nice, but far from state of the art. Many outside of NOLA, think differently. Those are the people who matter when it comes to awarding Super Bowls. Every time a new NFL stadium opens, our Grand Old Dame looks a bit older. New stadiums are built to maximize income. The Superdome has it's limits there. It's relatively expensive to operate, like an old ocean liner. And that affects the bottom line.
It's just a sad fact of sports economics. Even the Cubs at one point threatened to move out of Wrigley, unless some serious concessions were made. Nothing is sacred. I'm totally fine with the Dome, and if Benson is fine, then everything is OK. But the Dome is getting one more Super Bowl and that's it.
