this board seems to be in love with mike and gus from breaking bad, but i never found either to be groundbreaking or even that interesting . i think stringer was much more complicated and interesting than gus, and marlo much more ruthless.

Why choose Stringer to pair with Marlo?

NVM I get it now. I definitely think Stringer and Marlo are better, but I think the Wire is much better than Breaking Bad.

Mike and Gus.

Omar should be in a character question about The Wire.

This is like asking me to choose between my two favorite foods. I'm just glad I can binge and enjoy both.

Mike and Gus because they're more believable.

Marlo was a cold-blooded sociopath that wanted everything that wasn't him dead. I'm still pissed for what he did to Prop Joe! frick that TPOS, Joe treated him like a son!

Is this one of Breaking Bad's "major flaws in the writing" that you referenced but never gave examples of in the other thread?

"No, just no". Stringer Bell was obviously a pretty great character and made Elba into the star he is today. Not really a big fan of Marlo the character or his acting (didn't like him much in Bosch either). Fring is a great character, he plays the role of unsuspecting drug lord pretty beautifully. And he is "interesting". I really liked when they did the flashback of him and his friend at the Don's house, it provided good backstory for a good and complex character. Mike may not be the most interesting character, we don't know much about him personally other than that he is not to f'd with. I still liked him that role and thought he was very convincing. I like him even more in Better Call Saul now that we are getting to know much more about him.

Stringer and Marlo

Every major character on The Wire is better than every major Breaking Bad character

Hell, even the minor characters on The Wire are better and more believable than their counterparts
Ex: Bubbles and his crackhead friends >> Badger and his crackhead friends

actually, no. the most glaring writing flaws were how bad some of the major characters were; walt jr, marie and skyler(at times). mike and gus aren't bad characters, just not as good as some make them out to be. What really irritated me was how lazily some of skylers storyline was written, how she was able to always talk her way out of things, like the IRS investigating ted's company. The train robbery was preposterous as well.

Most of the complaints about breaking bad are about the characters(with the exception of walt) and are completely valid.

This is obviously subjective, but i was far more interested/entertained by the dynamic between marlo and stringer, how they were essentially the opposite of each other, yet both bad arse high level drug dealers. Jamie Hector might not be the greatest actor, but i think he pulled off marlo perfectly. The last scene with avon and stringer reminiscing on the balcony is arguably the best scene in the whole series.
