Petty is a replica of RG3.

If he has to play right away then yes. If he can be given time to develop then no. People are forgetting how Payton got on the map to begin with. He was known as an up & coming QB & offensive guru. He's had Brees for so long now that fans have lost sight of this.

If we take Petty with anything earlier than pick 78 i'd be pretty upset. He's really nothing special, and I guarantee you there will be another 'Petty' in next year's draft that we can take with a 2nd or 3rd rounder. We have too many holes to fill to take a QB when Brees is still probably 3-4 years from retiring, i don't want to risk drafting a QB in this year's draft just to see him waste his cheap rookie contract on the bench. Next year or the year after is the year to draft Drew's replacement for grooming IMO.

Plus we could get players like Mannion or Grayson in the 5th if we really wanted to take QBs.

Have a good friend who is a huge Baylor fan. Said Petty will be a steal in 2-3 round for the right team.

No bias there.

Saints were one he mentioned.

Does your friend also work in the Saints front office? If not, what he thinks really isn't important to what the Saints are actually going to o. I don't see them drafting a QB before the 6th round, especially considering they have made it clear they are focusing on improving the Def and making sure they get the most out of their picks THIS year.

I agree. I'm not suggesting the team reach for him at all but if he is still on the board in the 3rd round especially with the second pick that round, it would be ok. I wouldn't be excited about it but I would be ok with it. If he somehow is still there on the board in the 5th, it then becomes a no brainer. I know it sounds crazy that he would fall that far but NFL coaches are beginning to second guess these spread quarterbacks & their ability to play right away.

Mannion

If he just didn't have such a poor 2014 season, I would be higher on him. I watched a lot of his games & he was downright awful at times.

We're in the same boat then. If they take him at 78, ok. I wouldn't want them too, but I wouldn't lose any sleep over it either.

And for Mannion, I'm not necessarily high on him, I'm just saying the difference between him and Petty isn't all that big - especially if you plan on grooming them for a few years anyway - but he could be had a few rounds cheaper if they really wanted to get a QB in this class.

In terms of physical measurables, yes they are similar. Now go watch some highlights of both on YouTube. Petty has the better feet of the two which means he has the better potential when it comes to bein able to manipulate the pocket. Both have strong arms but Petty's release is quicker & his throwing motion is effortless. I didn't realize how effortless his motion is until seeing him throw at the Combine with camera being right up on him. In my opinion, those are two gifts Mannion can't claim.
