Options when a car is totalled?

I know this isn't outdoor related, but i trust you guys more than the OT.

My wife's car is basically worthless. It's a '99 Escort, but it WAS in perfect shape and ran great. She works from home, so there's never been a need to get her a new car.

The other day, some chick ran into the car while at a friends house. It smashed the drivers side doors, front and rear. The car's only work ~1500 maybe, so the body shop just called and totalled it.

So what are my options? Can i buy it back for cheap and try to find two new doors at Pipes or something? I would guess if we did that, it would have a salvaged title afterward?

Just looking for ideas...I've had a car totalled in the past, but it was way beyond repair.

OK, an insurance company gave you a check?

I would argue the value, to start with.

I've done this actually. But it will have a salvaged title. The car I did it with was worth about 8 grand. You might not be able to even buys door and have it fixed for the check they gave you.

You can do this but I would only do it if you really trust your shop.

Might be $1500 to you, probably more like $500 to the insurance company.

and ran great.

Does not matter.

The body shop will let you tow it off. I really doubt you can find the doors and have the necessary work done to repair it correctly and safely for under $5K. That's why it is totaled.

Well, we havent heard from the insurance company, but the body shop (Yokem Toyota) said they've sent a value of $2200 in the insurance company. The repair work was right around $3000.

It just pisses me off, because if you go look at Cars.com and Autotrader, cars in this shape are priced right around $3500. (obviously you could get them for less)

I guess we'll wait to hear from the Insurance company and go from there. No matter what, i'm out some money.

You will have two options. One is to accept that it is totaled and the insurance company will give you basically the KBB + tax title and license. Or you can elect to retain the car and they will give you the KBB + tt&l minus a salvage fee. You will have a slavage title on the car.

The frame (I guess a '99 would still have a frame) will in all likelyhood be bent. Doable but hard to fix that.

Cut it in half and ride it around for fun, or start doing stunt jumps and 360s with the e-brake

Well, do an internet search for what a 99 Escort is worth similar to yours.

As far as salvage title, I'd you buy it back from them, yes it'll be stamped salvaged.

It's a 99 though, NBD.

I wouldn't fix it, TBH.

If it's hit that hard, it will need to straightened out or it won't track straight.
Doors are a PITA to get lined up on a straight car, much less one that's been hit.

Yes.

ETA: Insurance companies are paying more than retail value ALOT lately. Might be better for you to relinquish the car if so.

Of course, every case is fact dependent, so YYMV. this should not be construed as legal advice.

That's how i feel about this car anyway. But i never advocate the wife to spend money. it usually turns into a LOT of money when she gets her mind set on something.

Thanks for the advice fellas...

Force the insurance company to find one for sale in like condition and price match it. If they balk, say you're getting an attorney.

They will then realize they have the choice of giving fair market value or fair market value AND attorney fees.

We did this recently. Got paid 3200 for a car that was 20 years old with 250k on it. Thing looked and ran mint.

I think the wife wants to just get a new car, but i'm definitely going to try this to how much i can get out of it.
