Better Movie: No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood?

Thought of this in the best movie in 10 years thread.

These two movies are often listed together. Apart from the fact that they came out in the same year, why is that?

I link them together in my mind as well.

Because they were both set in the West? Because they both showed cruelty?

If I had to vote, I would say There Will Be Blood is better. The evil shown in No Country with no justice ever offered shook me. Great movie, but I hated it at the end. And, I get that it is a commentary on how everything doesn't work out the way we want.

For There Will Be Blood, I saw the minister as being more evil than Daniel, so when he got his reward at the end of the bowling pin, I felt like justice, in a sense, had been done. It was not all pointless.

Which movie do you like best and why? And do you link them together in your mind? If so, why?

Oh. This thread again.

I try not to link them. Came out the same year so people link them that way. But it is great that we got the 2 best movies of the decade in the same year.

There Will Be Blood.

I really like both but prefer There Will Be Blood. Just a personal preference but I consider them in the same caliber.

I'd rate them equally. I don't think anyone could convince me one is better than the other.

TWBB was too, what's your point

Daniel Day Lewis's performance was staggering. Its unreal how back breaking he can make a movie feel

I'd give the nod to TWBB on that alone. NCFOM was phenomenal, and more entertaining as a whole even, but i was so engrossed with the polarity and fundamental disgust between Eli and Daniel that I felt ratlled for days by it

No country

Although there will be blood is very good.

Just shows Daniel Day-Lewis is a top 5 actor of all time.

Gangs of New York is my favorite movie... But still....

They're both excellent films. DDL's definitive performance (perhaps, along with GONY) - but No Country is my favorite of these two. Just pitch perfect delivery of the material. The 3 leads were excellent.

I much prefer No Country.

I can see why many folks like TWBB, but it was too long and confusing for me. I had to get on wikipedia while watching to see who the hell was who. Granted, I am not the type to get absorbed in a movie or watch it more than once to figure it out. Give it to me straight; you got one shot.

There Will Be Blood.

One of the most beautifully made movies I've ever seen and DDL turn as Plainview is an all-time great performance. The range of emotions this film instills in me when I watched it was exhausting.

and the whole "i don't want to criticize TWBB because it was art house and i may not have 'gotten it" worry should be over and more people should be honest by now and admit how bland, boring, and over-the-top TWBB is

You simply cannot go wrong with a Coens bros. movie, but I think overall the better movie was There Will Be Blood.
