....when you are having a conversation with them then are leaving to go somewhere. Whether it's out of town, or maybe somewhere further away than down the street, or whatever. I've heard "Be Safe" at the end of three different conversations this morning and the other party was going nowhere dangerous. In fact, one was just going home.....

Have you ever played Oregon Trail?

Traveling in the country can be dangerous.

I always say "Travel safe" to friends leaving to go anywhere at night that's more than 5 minutes away.

Of course, when people tell me to "Be careful/safe" - I usually say I'm going to drive swervey and take lots of chances.

Be safe has become another term for "goodbye" or "see you later" or "have a good trip."

I probably say it sometimes without thinking.

Because they want you to be safe and not get hurt.

Next question.

they genuinely don't want you to get hurt...?

or maybe they think you are too stupid and reckless to take care of yourself, so they feel they need to remind you to be safe when they are not around you

Would you rather the opposite be wished upon you?

I would also advise that you be on the look out for wooden nickels and if someone offers one, do not take it.

This isn't just an old person thing, I've heard many say it. My husband says it every night when I leave for work

I'm 33 and I say it every now and then. But I guess being a LEO it comes out easier when saying it to fellow LEO's.

"Goodnight, y'all. I'm leaving now."

"Cool. Hope you end up in a ditch."

maybe because they mean it, maybe because they've seen more life and death than you and realize that life is fragile, WTF would you even question something as self explanatory as that?

Most traffic accidents occur within 25 miles of home.

Further, if a person states "Be safe" and you have a problem with it, ask them; you may find your answer.

It means the same thing as "take care".
