My mother died last yr at the ripe old age of 92 and at the very end, she just looked up at me and told me for the 12000000 time in my life "be safe". Her way of telling me she loved me. And the OP has an issue with that????

I say it when it's raining outside. I say "have a good weekend" when it's Friday. Or "have a good week" when it's Monday. Sometimes I say "be good" if I know someone can be up to trouble.

Why do you car what other people say?

I guess people will just find shite to complain about. I tell my family and friends to be safe, be careful, take care, etc all the time and I'm not old. It's just a caring way of saying goodbye.

I say it. I want you to think about safety. If me saying that makes someoen think of safety in one instance and prevents an accident, that's a good thing.

Agree.

I'd imagine "be safe" does replace "take care" a bit more as people get older. Not across the board. I'd imagine young people almost never say it. People in their 20's maybe only say it to a friend going to Tijuana (or similar). People in their 30's and 40's get a little more conservative; someone driving home on a rainy night or icy road might get a "Be safe". In your 50's, going out to do yard work under a cloudy sky might be reason enough... and so on. But it's probably a very small number of people who use it as their standard sendoff / farewell (which is another variation).

Anyway, I'm guessing we as we get older we realize our own mortality and have seen a few friends picked off by unlikely circumstances. That, and some people tend to become complacent, risk-averse worriers as they age. And so their farewells lose a little vitality and slide down the scale from: "kick some arse" > "break a leg" > "have fun" > "be well/take care" > down to "be safe".

That's why old people who still have a twinkle in their eye and a reckless streak tend to come off as charming.

by nature of my profession I've seen a lot of people die young, here today gone tomorrow, I've said it, or variations of it for quite some time, as I'm getting older I, as well as peers, occasionally throw in a "love you brother" for good measure

Similar to what I said above... but in your case, I think it's because you've used up your 9 lives a few times over.

But I respect that.

I've gotten lucky a few times for sure but most weren't my fault, I have always been cautious when it comes to things that would kill me.

....when you are having a conversation with them then are leaving to go somewhere. Whether it's out of town, or maybe somewhere further away than down the street, or whatever. I've heard "Be Safe" at the end of three different conversations this morning and the other party was going nowhere dangerous. In fact, one was just going home.....

Because despite the perpetual spreading of the myth that "things are worse now", many things were legit much more dangerous back in the day. Driving was much more dangerous. Medical care was worse. The odds of never seeing the person you had just seen ever again were palpably higher than they are now.

Them (us) saying it is just a holdover from a less genteel time.
