Are Parker Rice and Levi Pettit Being Treated Justly?

For starters, what they did was terrible and should be reprimanded. I was the one who started the thread on the OT the first night. It was shocking, horrible, and wrong.
That said, their lives have now been destroyed. Their prospects for further education and a future job are pretty dim. They are social pariah and are getting death threats. There is a good chance that their family's lives are destroyed as well. No one will go near them. They don't even understand how much they are hated. You can tell that from the apology statements.
The fraternity has been disbanded. That is probably the best course of action because this seemed to be institutionalized. It was obviously full of racists, and these two men were participating in that culture and proliferating it.
But, here is the question: Is the punishment just? For those who want justice, is this justice?
Or, should the punishment be more severe? Should there be a legal punishment?
When we find a racist today, is that the unforgivable sin? Is there any chance for redemption? Is there any possibility for forgiveness?
Mel Gibson is finished because he said something against Jews when drunk. Even Robert Downey, Jr could not get Hollywood to give him another chance.
Do we sacrifice people to cleanse our own conscience? Does the mob want blood? How do we get the damn spot out?
Just some questions. What does real justice look like here?

The punishment is too harsh
They are being made an example of IMO
Not condoning their behavior

No one condones their behavior. It was terrible.
If we want justice - real justice - how do we decide what that is? What are the standards? What is the goal?

They shouldn't be near as fricked as they are. If they want to be racist that is their choice. There are plenty of racist people in power everywhere but just cause they didn't get put on blast they are fine.

Look it up. Downey spoke up for Mel a few years ago and implored Hollywood to forgive him because he was there for him when he had his drug problems and everyone turned their back on him.
No response. Gibson is finished.

The only real justice should be the embarrassment that they have to live with
I understand that will affect them for a long time, but I don't think they deserve to be punished beyond really that

The fact that they were outed is punishment enough for all the things you've listed.
I think expulsion not the right thing.
Finish the semester and find another school or withdraw willingly.

Absolutely not.
Their punishments are FAR beyond their "crimes".
Hell, we have felons on tv, in sports, and in politics who have been treated better.
The internet warriors attacking these kids are worse than what these kids did by at least 100 fold.

I got the impression he was doing okay since.

The frick? What kind of question is this?

No. Robert Downey, Jr. could not get Hollywood to give Mel Gibson another chance.
That was the context of what I was saying. Downey tried to get Gibson another chance and Hollywood ignored his plea.
Downey is one of the biggest names in Hollywood. He got another chance because his problem was drugs and not racism.

They didn't need to be expelled, but I am not sorry that they are. It was a knee jerk reaction to the video going viral. This is a good lesson on run it through your mind before you run it out your mouth.

Honestly they're getting off way easy compared to the sentences that innocent angels like trayvon martin and michael brown got

The problem is it should be just left alone. By taking action you alienate people to one side or the other and make the divide worse. One side said the blacks cry about everything and the blacks say whites are racist and blah blah blah and the animosity only gets bigger.
Oh this one fraternity is racist oh ok well we just won't associate with them. Unless they are out lynching people or yelling obscenities directly at people just let it go.

Cell phone cameras have accelerated this society into it's death. Every a-hole on the planet now thinks they know the intent of a 19 and 20 yr old drunk on a bus. Punishment is fine. Now we find people guilty from a 15 sec snip of video with no trial and ruin them. It's a fricking joke except for the victims who sang on cam.
