try to let them go. sometimes I've had to cut the line on big ones. I will sometimes fish for them purposefully though because I enjoy catching them.

I have some long needle nose pliers that I use but I've lost some good money in spensive crank baits to those boogers...I can usually leave them in the water and get the bait out and turn them loose...

I fish for them all the time on the Trinity and they are a blast to catch. You guys that kill for no reason are fricked in the head. Killing an animal that is probably as old as your grandfather is senseless. Gar are a very slow growing, slow breeding fish and idiots like you are the reason their numbers are steadily on the decline.

gar aren't the problem...asian carp need to be totally decimated...

I usually keep it, odds are I'm targeting them during a gar tournament. Haven't ever caught a gar by chance.
