Everything downshift said is perfect.

Worse is hooking a 10 lb choupique in a bass tourny, thinking you got it won, then you find out its not a bass

I would chop their snouts off with a shovel then kick it back in the water.

I lived on BM across from the Santa Maria so I would catch these frickers all the time

I've never actually hooked a gar. They've fricked with topwater baits at times but I just yank it away, usually see them coming

heres another one we got on a jug. He was bleeding so much that we just said frick it and let him go. Much better to do on a boat that isn't a white fiberglass bay boat

Have only ever caught them on a trot line. In those cases I always whacked the shite out the nasty frick with a paddle.

What's the point in killing them for fun?

It's not fun, it's a pain in the arse all the way around. One of us has to die though, that's just the way it is.
ETA: it's the only thing my paddle has ever been used for

I'm not sure I follow your logic. Why exactly do you have to kill them and throw them away? Is it because you're afraid of being bit? Gar fish aren't particularly hard to handle nor are they aggressive.

People who go through the trouble of bludgeoning a gar fish to death rather than simply unhooking them are simple minded, backwards, sister-fricking idiots.

You've obviously never had them take every bait off your trot line or yo-yos.

Underwater Fish Light brought in probably 40 of them, it looked just like wick's pic. To the face!

I hooked a giant gar, about 4 feet, last spring along the coast in Vermillion Parish. When I finally realized it was a gar and not the biggest damn redfish ever, I cut the line. Told a couple of people about it and caught hell for about a month. They all wanted the fish.
