And do you really think the blowback has to do with success? I'd argue it's more gendered-based than anything.

That's what I meant by demographics. This is a bunch of guys on the board. It's not just a "girls movie" it's a wildly successful girls movie. Which is also why y'all like Tangled better, as a group, as it tries to hide the fact it's a princess movie. Honestly, that kind of irritates me, as the movie doesn't know what it wants to be (or more accurately, it knows what it wants to be, but is somewhat ashamed of itself).

That said, Tangled has one of the most beautiful set pieces of modern animation (the floating lights sequence), which does put it in the conversation with Sleeping Beauty, another beautifully rendered film.

5 WALL-E --- this was a tough one, but there is some beauty in wall-e.

3 Toy Story 3

7 Wreck-It-Ralph - would rather sub in the Incredibles over both of these. Frozen is a terrible movie, was just catchy with the ladies.

One of the toughest calls, and while I really love all of the Toy Story's, the Monsters series is fairly perfect. If you don't cry when Sully opens the door at the end, you are an inhuman monster.
Toy Story 3 was great. I wish it had been more original basically stealing the Jesse scene from TS2 and turning it into a movie. But I liked the plot well enough. And the ending almost had me in tears.

That being said. Monsters, Inc is a better movie IMO. It felt so original. The characters were awesome. The best humor in all of the Pixar movies. The plot twist. And "Boo". When sully opens the door. Like you said...

Oh. And why did we have this Round 2 before Round 1 of the Misc. bracket? Or did I miss it?

Just taking time to work out the kinks in that one. I'll probably do both rounds of it starting Monday. Voting for round 2 on both Classics and Renaissance will be open from tomorrow til Monday in one thread

Elsa is one of the most well-rounded female characters in the Disney canon. Hell, she's one of the most well-rounded villains in the Disney canon, as most are just evil for the sake of being evil, while Elsa is an antagonist, not a true villain. She's scared and lonely, which results in poor decisions that create the tension of the film

Well rounded in what way? She's a shut in recluse for 99% of the movie. That's her range. She was told fear was her biggest enemy yet remained afraid with zero attempt to conquer her fear. Until her sister sacrificed her own life for hers. She has zero redeeming qualities.

quote:

Anna is not stupid, she's just also sheltered and lonely, which manifests itself in a sincere belief in fairy tales (which so does the audience)

Anna is sheltered and lonely, as well as being stupid and naive. Goes off alone to save her kingdom, no plan on what she will actually do or knowledge of the land. Without Kristoff, she would have died going in the wrong direction.

They are in no way shape or form role models. One is ruled by fear and it takes the apparent death of her sister to move her. The other is a simple minded sweetheart that lucks out by finding a man to save her. Her own hero??? Are you a 6 year old girl? She does nothing to help the situation until jumping in front of that sword with 2 1/2 minutes left. Hell she almost got Kristoff killed by the snow monster.

quote:

And it is only when Elsa remembers that love is more powerful that she no longer has to be alone. She didn't have to protect Anna by cutting herself off like that.

Thank God nobody had to get hurt... Oh wait Anna had to die before she finally decided to change.

Agreed. IMO, Ratatouille is the most underrated Pixar film there is.
Amen. I think Ratatouille is very good and it's better than Frozen. It's not a hit like Frozen, but it's a better film for sure. And Ratatouille is a gorgeous movie.
