Sorry you had a bad experience. There are assholes in every profession, really sucks you had one at such a difficult time.

It's true that every profession has jerks. This guy was bizarre. This was only the second kitty of my own that I had to put down and I try to maintain through those times as much as possible until I leave the vet's office. I know they're going to go eventually in my lifetime, but my head was spinning. It was an unexpected event and my kitty was only about 10 at the time.

When I had the diabetic kitty, my vet told me to put her down because while the cat loved me, she was not cooperative with the vet at all and I'd had trouble giving her antibiotics etc... Vet gave her 4u of the insulin and sent me home to think about it. I was on the internet all night researching and I wasn't sure I could shoot or test her. Found the Feline Diabetic message board and those folks convinced me to try, told me not to feed the recommended dry low carb food, recommended low carb Fancy Feast pates, told me they'd help me shoot and test if I had trouble and not to dare start with 4u of lantis especially with changing the food. I told my vet what I was going to do and she was still convinced the food wouldn't change anything and the dose would be too low etc and I couldn't do it. Well, I could shoot with no problem. Testing was a big challenge and never without a hassle, but I burrito wrapped that cat and I got it done. Started with 1u and had to drop that dose almost immediately. 16 days later, she off insulin and never had to have it again. A vet tech on the site told me every dose to give based on my testing results and it worked like a charm.

My vet has now called me several times to get my food list and asked if I would volunteer to help someone shoot and test a difficult cat, but sadly, none of them took me up on it. They gave up and put their kitties to sleep without even trying. It's not for everyone, I know, and it affects your lifestyle if you don't have someone else to help you.

She's definitely off her food- regular food- no? I can't say what her deal is. But she's not depressed, not not eating/drinking, not showing any signs of stress. She's chasing Mosquitos and eating pork chops. Unless she's on an end of life bender, she sounds like she's experiencing nothing more than a little neurosis. Not uncommon in cats

Could be a tooth issue and your kitty just got really hungry. Have the teeth or gums been checked recently?

awesome story and well done on your part- on multiple levels. Anyone that devoted to their pet deserves a special place in heaven. I lost a beloved Siamese that was only 12 years old. Not much could be done for him and my wife handled te euthanasia. I still miss that damn cat

Go to the vet. The girl I am seeing lost her cat 2 months ago because someone had shot it with a pellet, probably years before, that poisoned it and killed it. It stopped eating before and an x-ray right away might have saved it. It's unlikely that's your situation but if you love an animal vet bills are worth it .

Dental exams are one of those things clients always think the vet uses to screw them and make more money. Truth is, while dental checks are extra profit and additional services a vet can offer, they are essential to the wellness of your pet. If it's been 2 years, yeah the kitty is probably due for at least an exam.

I dont know how this is taken in the vet community, but a feline vet i worked for said indoor cats dont need to go to the vet after their initial shots. Well unless theyre sick.

My girl cat hasnt gone to the vet in 10+ years

She's inside 80-90% of the time. She'll meow when she wants out and meow when she wants back in.

In my experience, the vet at least opens the mouth and takes a look. At a certain age, the vet may suggest getting a dental. The teeth are cleaned and examined with the cat is under. A check of my adopted rescue indicated some sort of bad gum disease when the vet examined him on a routine visit. I think he was about 2. I don't think the disease is the norm, but he had to have all the teeth but 3 removed. Not a fun experience. That's when he wouldn't eat or drink. Turned out a vet stand in gave us the wrong antibiotic and he got a raging infection under his chin that was like a huge hole. I couldn't see it because he wouldn't lift his head. When I could finally stroke him under the chin a day or so later, I felt it. New antibiotic did the trick, but he got awfully dehydrated quickly. I was force feeding him water through a syringe to keep him hydrated until he felt well enough to eat.

It felt like forever since I was up most of the night a few nights, but they comeback pretty quickly, considering. I think it was also long for me because, as you say, it's so hard to see your pet in pain.

My cats are indoor cats. I hate fleas and my street is busy at times. One never wants to go out. One tries to escape regularly. He's like a gray ghost and can get past you when you open a door without you knowing it. I'm about to finish a big screened in porch, so I'm hoping to let them hang out there when I'm out there. If I start seeing fleas, though, I'm not sure that will last!

I completely understand still missing that kitty. I can't watch the euthanasia. I just cannot do it. I'd rather see them alive and looking like they're asleep doesn't cut it for me. I don't want to see a last breath. I don't want to live with that memory.

When I lost my most favorite callico kitty ever in May, my vet left me in a room with her by myself to say my goodbyes and they unlocked the back door and back gate so I could escape when I was ready without having to be seen by the packed waiting room. She told me call in my credit card the next week and not even worry about paying at that time. I just let the tech know when I was done and slipped out of the back so they could lock it back up.
