My 1 prediction: down road, LBJ/CP/KD/other future FA's will seriously investigate economics of launching own league. As negotiating tactic.

Well, salary cap-wise they aren't.

That being said, let's not pretend 90% of these athletes are good enough with their money that they can control a league and deal with finances. Let's argue that Lebron and Durant team up to create a league. There friends are running it, and it is not an arm's length transaction between the owners and the players. Everything will be under the microscope, and they'd have to show over the period of multiple years they can not only compete with the NBA but pay their players enough during that period to show other players that it's the future.

Somebody with insanely deep pockets would have to be willing to take a massive risk and bathe in debt the first decade.

The average NBA player makes a lot more money than anyone from any other sport.
it's also the only sport with 100% guaranteed contracts, which is just stupid.

NFL teams have 50+ players on roster, MLB teams have ~15 players on the gameday active roster, plus the countless players in the minors.

The NBA has themselves and the D-League. It's way more exclusive.

I doubt they'd do it themselves.

QUESTION: Can someone explain to me how the league works? What % of revenue do the owners and players get? What's fair? If there wasn't a cap, how much would Lebron be worth? Would fringe NBA players lose value? Do the owners even like the cap? Would ticket prices skyrocket if salaries went up?

The NFL shows revenues of 9 billion a year
NBa shows 5 billion, that's what the NFL makes just on tv.
The average NFL team makes twice as much money as an NBA team.

The nfl has nothing to do with what nba players should make. Literally, nothing.

I'd love to see where you are getting those numbers, most of the NFL teams are privately held and don't release their numbers at all.

The average NFL team also has up to 4 times as many players at any given point in time.

Then why break away? Wouldn't that be the whole reason for doing this?

Poorer owners like the cap, richer owners aren't fans of it (historically).

Ticket prices would skyrocket.

Lebron James and Amare Stoudamire made almost the same amount of money this year. Let that sink in for a second.
