While true, this would open a ridiculous can of worms for overpaid players. Could you imagine what Brooklyn would pay Joe Johnson?

That'd be their own fault. Those franchises would deserve what they got. Smarter teams wouldn't overpay mediocre guys. You only get one uncapped guy, and you can still max out the number of years if you want at 5. Ideally, Lebron would get 50m. Durant would get 40. And then you end up getting to guys like Marc Gasol would could probably end up making 25m or so. Smart teams would save their uncapped exception for big time players coming on the market or to keep great players at home with extra year incentives. Although it would be tougher to have super teams. If you have Durant as your uncapped guy, Westbrook can take 18 to stay in OKC or he could probably command 30m in an open market.

I guess my point is badly run, overspending teams are going to be badly run, overspending teams no matter the system.

Cheap teams are going to cheap. Smart teams will still win out. But I think allowing each team 1 salary exception on roster will ensure the 30 or so superstar players make what they are worth.

I like this, especially if there was a way to make the contracts very flexible for trading purposes, so people could dump a super star who wasn't performing.

That's the one thing that I can't figure out....how to work out trades of superstars. If you already have an uncapped player, and you're trading for another, how would that work? I guess that it kind of couldn't. So you'd have to make damn sure that's your guy and you have him at a good number. This would benefit smarter teams too though, maybe signing mid tier superstars to only 3 year uncapped contracts at a lower rate....25 mil or so.

But as I think about it, in the last few year, when was the last time a guy who would've been an uncapped player was traded? It doesn't happen often. Harden wouldn't have been the uncapped guy on OKC. I suppose Love wouldve been, but he was still on that 2nd rookie deal(which would be a whole other thing, I'm assuming we'd probably get rid of restricted free agency.)

I dunno, it has it's questions, but I like it as a general idea

I'm a big fan of thinking outside the box. Problems can be solved with smart people trying to figure them out. People give up too easily.

You don't even have to think that much out of the box. Just remove the max contract. Keep the cap if you'd like. Keep the luxury tax. The max contract for a player is asinine.

I think there needs to be some cap to create parity and to somewhat protect owners from themselves. I'm against the luxury tax anyway because I think you should be able to keep your players with no penalty. If you are above the cap, you should have to trade within a certain dollar amount, like it is now.

I really think all of this is solved by allowing the top tier players to make more. They are the only ones who are really underpaid. But if you pay them what they are worth and it effects the cap, then the best players will never win a title and will be called "selfish" by fans and media. The one uncapped rule prevents that.
