Exactly. McCoy is still a top 5 back in his prime even if his fantasy numbers went down.
Is that the argument against him?

So he's a back that has big play ability, can tote the rock 300+ times per season, gives you 4+ yards per carry in a down year, and gives you 1300+ yards every season.
Very average back we're talking about.

Last time the Jets had a good RB they were giving 31 year old Curtis Martin 371 carries to the tune of 1600 yards

they could always take a pick on RB. This is a decent class.
but are they gonna blow mid round picks in a trade to get a Mariota?
they'd probably have to at least give a 1st and 2nd round pick this year as part of the package.

Looks like it all happened super quickly. I wonder which team made the original call. The tweet sort of implies the Eagles contacted the Bills, and I guess that's more likely since they were supposedly considering cutting McCoy.
