A nutritional scientist and professor Paul Breslin from Rutgers, the state university of New Jersey and two cancer biologists at New York city’s Hunger College, David Foster and Onica LeGendre have discovered that an ingredient of extra virgin oil known as Oleocanthal kills different human cancer cells without harming the healthy cells.

The team of scientists from Hunter College and Rutgers reported that Oleocanthal kills the cancer cells by rupturing the vesicles that store the cell’s waste.
To prove that Oleocanthal targets a key protein in cancer cells which triggers a programmed cell death known as apoptosis, Breslin from Rutgers worked with Foster and Legendre to find evidence to support his hypothesis. In exact words, Breslin staid “We needed to determine if oleocanthal was targeting that protein and causing the cells to die”.
During their experiment, Foster and Legendre applied oleocanthal to the cancer cells and later discovered that the cells died quickly, in less than an hour. Normally, programmed cell death takes between 16 and 24 hours and the team believed that something was causing the cells to break down.
While analysing the results, LeGendre stated that the enzymes in the cancer cells were the factors of the breakdown of the cancer cells. The oleocanthal was destroying the vesicles known as lysosomes, which store a lot of waste. As vesicles starts explode, everything in the cancer cell breaks down.

Apart from this, Oleocanthal is also known to protect nerve cells from the kind of damage that occurs in Alazheimer’s disease. Studies showed evidence of how Oleocanthal helps decrease the accumulation of beta-amyloid in the brain, which often leads to the Alzheimer’s disease.

It's probably more complicated than just drinking Olive oil. It's one particular molecule that has to be applied to the cancer cells. Maybe the amount of oleocanthal needed requires two bottles worth of olive oil.

This is the type of research and findings that will save us. Preventive measures are where it's at, since there are too many evil mother frickers in the world who would stand to lose money if a cure is found and made available to the general public.

well, I wondered something more on the lines of,

how can you deliver the ingredient?

in the lab, did they just paint it on the target?

They need to cook it and try again. I'd like to know if we get the benefits of the ingredient by using it in cooking, or if there needs to be a pill version of uncooked EVOO.

instead of pouring money into buddy deal money pits like Solyndra, the gov't should be giving people like this an open checkbook to see if this actually works

In a related story, the FDA approves a massive recall of all brands of olive oil and olive oil-related products.

My link is the abstract:

Figure 3. OC downregulates ASM activity to induce LMP and cell death in cancer cells which is reversed by anionic lipids. (A) PC3, MDA-MB-231, BxPC3 and BJ cells were plated at a density of 3 x 105

cells/60 mm plate. 24 hr later the cells were provided with fresh media containing 0 or 10% serum and 10 µM OC where indicated. 4 hours later, the cells were treated with 5µM acridine orange. 15 minutes later, the cells were collected and subjected to fluorescence microscopy using Texas Red filter setting. (B) PC3, MDA-MB-231 and BxPC3 cells were plated at a density of 5 x 106

cells/10 cm plate. 24 hr later the cells were provided with fresh media containing 0 or 10% serum and 10 µM OC where indicated. 4 hours later, the cells were collected and subjected to the Acid Sphingomyelinase Fluorometric Assay kit to determine the activity of acid sphingomyelinase. (C) PC3 cells were plated at a density of 2 x 105

cells/60 mm plate. 24 hr later, the cells were provided with fresh media containing 10% serum or fresh media containing 10% serum and 30 µM Cerulenin as indicated. 24 hours later, the cells were provided with fresh media containing 0% serum and 10 µM OC where indicated. 4 hours later, the cells were treated with 5 µM acridine orange. 15 minutes later, the cells were collected and subjected to fluorescence microscopy using Texas Red filter setting or western blot analysis for levels of Hsp70 and GAPDH. (D) PC3 cells were plated at a density of 2 x 105

cells/60 mm plate. 24 hours later, the cells were provided with fresh media containing 0% serum, 10 µM OC and 10 µM OC with lipids where indicated. 4 or 24 hours later, cells were treated with 5 µM acridine orange. 15 minutes later, the cells were collected and subjected to fluorescence microscopy using Texas Red filter setting – 24 hours later cell viability was also determined. Imagej software was used to quantify the Western blots. Experiments shown are representative of at least two independent experiments. Scale bars = 200 µm.

Why? If you cure cancer, then there is a massive windfall in cancer drugs and hospitalization costs. Huge corporations will fail and can't make money any longer. And we can't have that.

So let's make sure we give internet control to the FCC.
