GALVESTON, TX (KTRK) --
The U.S. Coast Guard is looking for a missing kayaker last seen near South Deer Island Saturday.
Alex Gallant, 23, was kayaking with Brandon Curacas, 21, when, according to Curacas, Gallant tipped over into the water and began to panic.
As he tried to get to safety, he reportedly tipped Curacas' boat and both men began to drift while holding on to their overturned boats.
Curacas managed to grab onto a piling and was later picked up by a rescue boat. He was treated for mild hypothermia and released.
Gallant continued to drift. The Coast Guard searched by air and water, but hasn't been able to find him.
If anyone has any additional information that may assist the search effort, please contact the Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston Command Center at 281-464-4854 or on the radio at VHF Marine Channel 16.
If you go offshore in your kayak, wear a life jacket. Especially in winter.

Not only that, practice flipping and re entry. If you can't get back in, you don't need to be out there.
Any body fishing the GCKFA Tournament in Pensacola?

My feelings on jumping out of a perfectly flying airplane.

Sounds like the guy shouldn't have been anywhere near a kayak

If any of you guys fished the last Ride the Bull rodeo in GI, this was a very common occurrence. I must've seen 5 separate instances in where this happened in the pass. Most of the boats I saw flipping were fairly inexpensive and stubby, but I did see one jackson turn over. Luckily the rodeo had chase boat going around, but he would've been lucky to try to flip and get back in the yak w/out those guys helping.

Did the entire yak flip or people just fell out? I just can't imagine a scenario where my yak actually flips over.

whole yaks flipped. it was wild. I really couldn't believe what I was seeing. you think some of these guys that were fishing out of a kayak in the pass, given that crazy current, would know what they were doing. I guess it happens more than I thought. I fish out of a native ultimate 12, which is more canoe-like. I've never had a close-to-flippin experience- knock on wood.

Flipping is more prevalent among inexperienced kayakers, but it can happen to anyone. Had a very skilled buddy flip going out of Belle Pass, when hit by a rogue wake. Got hung up in braided line from his poles too. Easily could have drowned.
I'm guessing these two guys, 23 and 21, probably had little experience, but still a silly thing to do. Also points out the difficulty of attempting to rescue someone drowning. They are so panicked that they will drown you too.
