Even before this ranking we knew how far we have dropped on the defensive line unit. How did we get to this point?

Luckily 2016 will be stacked with elite Defensive lineman but that doesn't excuse the last 4 years.

Great guy, couldn't coach a DL to save his life. Players in Chicago wanted him gone saying he had no idea what he was doing.

Valentine definitely has the potential but 80% think he's an all american right now. We are very weak at DE's this year.

THIS ^ I have no idea where people are getting these assumptions. People on here were freaking out saying the SEC sabotaged LSU's season by not clearing Valentine. The kid hasn't even played a down and looked slow and overweight in his highlight tape.

9. LSU: Ed Orgeron will have his hands full with this group, but what it lacks in depth it has in potential. Christian LaCouture and Davon Godchaux are back at tackle, but with Jermauria Rasco and Danielle Hunter gone, that leaves seldom-used Tashawn Bower, Deondre Clark and Sione Teuhema as the lone incumbents at defensive end.

It was a joke.

But seriously though, three guys that were not mentioned in that little tidbit are Herron, Valentine, and Gilmore, all of whom are very talented.

I don't think it is ridiculous for me to believe that at least one, possibly two, of these guys will live up to their potential; especially with Ed Orgeron in the mix.

Don't forget about Quentin Thomas. I thought he was poised to have a big year before the injury.

Expectations for LSU's DL have been based on the perception that LSU was recruiting elite level athletes on the DL. The performance hasn't met expectations, so it is natural for people to lower their expectations to reflect historic performance more than athletic potential. It is hard to argue against ESPN's reasoning.

With the coaching changes we will get to find out if the disappointing performance of the past was due to misevaluation of athleticism and/or competitive nature, or due to inferior development and/or application of talent. If it is the former it will take time to correct via recruiting. If it is the latter, then LSU will benefit from improved DL performance immediately.

This.

For whatever reason, Chavis just never really emphasized rushing the passer.

Thinking that Valentine can be a quality DT is no more absurd than the idiots that actually think Fournette has a chance to win the Heisman Trophy.

Just because ESPN says LSU's DL is "ranked" Ninth in the SEC doesn't make it a fact.

Firstly it's a subjective category, the last time I checked the only statistic that counts in football is the final score. How can a Conferences' D-Lines be ranked with certainty.

Secondly, does anyone here think that the LSU staff would (if possible) trade their entire DL for the entire DL of any of the the eight SEC squads listed ahead of them? Nope, nope, nope...

I wouldn't have cared if LSU were ranked anyplace from first or last in this article, it is a fluff piece and typical of the off-season drivel from ESPN.

ESPN is shallow in their research and insight. Valentine is a huge addition and will make a tremendous positive impact.
