Is the $40 upgrade fee a one time thing or is it a recurring fee?

Are the phones still usually like $199 or so? I haven't upgraded through AT&T in a while

Just call in after you receive your statement with the charge on it and ask them to remove it. Most of the time they will.

Used to. The last few people I know that tried said it didn't work. They're really trying to push everyone to the Next plan, and this is one way of making the old way look less attractive.

$199 for current model flagships, and $250+ for phablets like the iPhone 6+, Galaxy Note, and Nexus 6.

There's an upgrade fee that is one-time only, but also a "usage" fee that is monthly. the usage fee is $15 with Next plans and $40 for contract plans. We were grandfathered in with our old phones at the $15 rate. If we had purchased our own phone or paid $200 with a 2 year contract, we would be upped to the $40 rate. The girl at Best Buy had a hard time understanding this as she tried to tell us the phone was "free".

So they're going to charge me an extra $40 every month for having a new phone?

Smart Phones are about $700. Your data plan subsidizes your phone. With Next you trade back your phone after X number of months and get a new one. But even a "free phone" you're paying $500 for the phone that comes off the data plan.

Only if you choose to upgrade early. If you pay the full 20/24 months, you have purchased the phone and stop paying the monthly installments. So your bill goes down at that point.

Sometimes the next plan is a better deal. You get the phone after paying just taxes ($50-100 depending on where you live) on the un-subsidized phone (~$600 to $900) pay off the full cost of the phone with an interest free loan. Also with the next and a 10 gb / month data plan they give you a $15/month discount on the $40/month smart phone usage fee. If you have a 15 gb / mo data plan the discount is $25/month.

If you choose to upgrade outside of Next, you don't get the discount at all and pay the whole $40/month + $199 for the phone + $40 activation. In my case, with a 15 gb/month family plan it was cheaper (~$200) to do Next.

ETA: you can't have a grandfathered unlimited plan on ATT Next.

That you actually have to pay for your phone? It's not that bad.

Bottom line - pay about $25 more per month when you go next to pay for your new phone over time OR pay about $25 more per month for your phone network access fee, which is probably about $15 per month now if you just upgrade using the $200 new phone option. With that option they bump your phone network access fee to $40 from $15.

In short, either way you go your bill is going up $25 per month when you upgrade through ATT. With next, you don't come out of pocket $200 for the up front upgrade phone price.

When you factor in time value of money the Next option is the better one if you're not buying the phone outright

Unless you are on an older plan pre-dating Family Share and Next.

Not sure about that. Even under the older plans, when you go to "upgrade" they automatically change (increase by $25) your charges for the network access if you don't use the next option. Now if you show up with your own phone that you bought somewhere else, you are right, no plan change.
