Best Civil War movie to date? It's certainly my favorite. At the very least, Glory is the most emotional Civil War movie to date. There are some truly epic emotional scenes in this movie.

One of my all time favorite movies.

Cue Denzel's tear...

Spoilers

The only part I didnt like was the ending. The General did explain why they had to sacrifice soldiers with a frontal assault while the other soldiers tried to breach the fort. Why did the Fightin 54th have to do it.

For some reason, I tend to forget about this movie when thinking about all time best war movies, or best 80s movies.

It was pretty great though.

Because the 54th volunteered.

"I will."

Is was a great movie with an incredible cast (especially looking back)..

Kind of off the subject.. Does "The Outlaw Josie Wales" count as a Civil War movie?

Going back hundreds of years, it was considered highly prestigious to lead an attack on an enemy fortified position. They would attempt to secure a breach. The lead unit was called the forlorn hope. The forlorn hope was often a unit seeking glory and could expect to be rewarded for their bravery if they survived. Most times though, forlorn hope units were expected to suffer incredible casualties. The leader of a forlorn hope, if he survived, often times was likely to be promoted. The men in Glory would have expected the casualties they suffered going in.

goosebumps

it's the best civil war movie by a long shot IMO. Gettysburg has its moments as well. Gods and Generals is plodding and boring.

Yes. Missouri was fighting the Civil War at least 5 years before Fort Sumter. Read about the Battle of Black Jack in Kansas.

quote:

The Battle of Black Jack took place on June 2, 1856, when anti-slavery forces, led by the noted abolitionist John Brown, attacked the encampment of Henry C. Pate near Baldwin City, Kansas. The battle is cited as one incident of "Bleeding Kansas" and a contributing factor leading up to the American Civil War of 1861 to 1865.

That was five years before the official start of the Civil War. Some historians now refer to the Battle of Black Jack as the actual start to the Civil War.

Great movie
Not nominated for an Oscar, although much better than the Oscar winner that year (but then, what movie wasn't).

Try again. I know it's a part of your state pride thing to try to convince people the Civil War started elsewhere but history has decided to split what happened between MO and KS as a separate entity from the Civil War itself.

eta: Great movie though.

My favorite visual scene of the 654th marching to the beach through the other units just beautifully shot movie all around. Also love that scene where Freeman slaps Denzel and chews him out.
