In all seriousness, I don't see any need for him to get pitching lessons at this age. Unless he has an awkward throwing motion work on arm strength exercises and don't let him throw too much. Stick to a fastball and change up. In a few years when he starts high school will be when you want to look into lessons if you are not satisfied with the coaching he will get with his high school team.

So does this mean, you will not give me Dennis' number ?

I used a self taught method to get my sons mechanics corrected when he was 8-9. We would stand on the patio in the backyard with tennis balls and play a game together. from a stretch pitching stance, we would step towards the house and bounce the ball on the patio and up onto the roof. The game was to see who could hit a pipe vent.

The game got him to use a good arm slot for throwing the ball. It used to be a sidearm shotput type throw, but in order to get the ball on the roof he had to start coming over the top.

Just something that seemed to work for him.

Btw, shake the haters that scoff at pitching lessons for a 12 year old.

I'd go to YouTube if you just want the basics. Have some father-son time & teach him yourself.

For a 12 yr old repeating the motion & release point are the most important things. Getting a feel for a curve ball too. It's almost impossible for a 12yr old to develop a good change up, so I wouldn't waste time with that yet.

Could be the worst advice given so far.

You don't think a 12yr old should get a feel for a curveball?

Or do you have a son that thinks he throws a great mythical change up?

Slowing your motion down and lobbing the ball is not a change up fwiw. Most 12yr olds do not have the hand size and especially don't have feel to throw a correct change up.

Any 12 yr old can learn a curve. It doesn't mean abuse it. Unless you are throwing gas you need an off speed pitch to show 8-10x in a game.

2 seam fastballs are also ineffective at that age. There's more to that then just gripping the ball

Change-ups are the easiest to learn of any off-speed pitch.
A c-change or circle change is possibly the most effective of all pitches.

Smaller the hand the more movement from any pitch is usually, therefore a 2-seam or any variation of change-ups are effective.

sorry but you're wrong. A change up has the easy concept, definitely not the Easiest to throw. There's a reason 3/4ths of all MLB pitchers have trouble throwing an effective change. shite a lot of them won't even attempt to throw it in a game. But I'm sure your 12yr old has it down

I'd also agree with this. With technology nowadays (most phones have cameras capable of taking slow motion videos) film your kid pitching and break down the video. Focus mainly on arm slot and stride. You can pull up numerous pictures of pitchers at different moments in their throwing motion and compare them to the video of your son to see if there are any glaring differences.

Most 12yr olds do not generate enough mph to have movement on a 2seam.

Not to mention ball pressure, arm slot, and wrist action play a big role. It's not as easy as griping and throwing.

Eddie Yarnall does them at Pitch by Pitch academy in BR (Bill Dailey's). My son doesn't take pitching lessons from Eddie but I watch him while my son does hitting with Bill and Eddie is awesome with the kids.

I'm 22. Don't have a 12 year old big guy but keep talking out your arse like usual.
Pitched and coached a many of pitchers recently.

Nope

Got 2 of them, oldest is 13. Taught them both how to pitch (along with MANY other kids). Neither one knows how to throw a curve.

Pitched into my college years and have been coaching baseball for the past 19 years. I know exactly what it means to throw any pitch you want to discuss. Throwing a 3 finger change up is the first pitch(other than fastball) I teach. And yes, it is as easy as grip it and throw it. The extra finger contact/friction does the work. Has nothing to do with "feel" or arm slot. Is it going to dance like a circle change, no, but the objective for a 12 yr old should be focused on the change of speed and location of the pitch. And THE RIGHT TIME to use it.
