Imagine, for a second, turning on your TV during the spring and instead of seeing another college hoops game of Villanova vs Syracuse, there's a stock car race lining up with a peculiar distinction. Rather than plastered with "Budweiser", "Wonderbread", or "Ole Spice" on the front hood, the cars read "Michigan State", "Indiana", "Stanford", "M.I.T.", "Auburn", "Texas A&M", "Florida", ect. The cars are all alternative fuel or fuel efficient vehicles built by their schools respective engineering departments. The tracks are the same as NASCAR or Indycar, but only half the laps.

Would you watch this?

No. It would probably be even less interesting than nascar.

I would watch college boxing.

My old dad tells me back when they had college boxing, LSU was very good.

That'd be sort of cool to have a 24 hours of LeMans type of thing. Semi sport/endurance race cars~ obviously they wouldn't have the money to build crazy cars.

I think money would be the most limiting factor and the size of the race (not enough competitors).

LSU has a team like this as well, but the competitions are rather limited. I'm talking about bringing it into full-scale stock car racing, with multiple races around the country, conference championships, a chase for the National Championship, TV deals, crashes, partnerships between universities and automakers, research into alternative power sources, ect. Basically, the rules would be fairly fast and loose as to the power source so that universities would be free to chase grants and push the envelope of technology.

Shorter races would make them less boring, more varied vehicles would make it a more academic exercise while increasing the excitement, tying them to Universities would allow the circuit to tap into school pride and existing conference TV networks.

I think it could be a winning idea.

If it was rally racing I'd probably watch. Maybe I'd watch a road race if they used some tracks like Road Atlanta, Road America, Watkins Glen, etc. I wouldn't watch college stock car races.
