Human remains discovered inside a statue of Buddha. That's weird enough. Even stranger is the procedure monks would use to "self mummify" themselves to achieve enlightment.

quote:

These monks would typically subsist on water, seeds and nuts for 1,000 days, then roots, pine bark and a toxic tea made from sap of the Chinese lacquer tree for another 1,000 days while sealed inside a stone tomb, according to CNET.

They would breathe through a small tube and ring a bell to let everyone know they were still alive, Business Insider Australia reported. Once the ringing stopped, they'd be left inside for another 1,000 days.

Those who were mummified are said to have achieved enlightenment, Smithsonian reported.

Regardless of whether or not you believe in what they worship, you have to admire their commitment.

So you'd know your time is up 6 years in advance?

And what about pooping that second 1000 days?

I would think a slight itch on any part of your body would literally drive you insane?

Agreed. But if someone could find me that xray machine that can penetrate metal but still expose bone, it would be much appreciated...

These dudes are definitely on to something beyond the body. Here's the Monk in 1963 that caught himself on fire and didn't budge as protest. "As he burned he never moved a muscle, never uttered a sound, his outward composure in sharp contrast to the wailing people around him."

For the pic and story
