Why couldn't Demps do what Presti did?

Rick Adelman is why.

If that Minnesota pick is as high as it was expected to be, we draft Damian Lillard instead of Austin Rivers. No need to trade for Holiday and we are now following the OKC model. But Rick Adelman is a good coach and totally screwed the Pelicans.

OKC started out the season with at least 8 NBA caliber players and all of their draft picks. They just traded their 4th best player and a draft pick for multiple bench players. I'm not trying to say the deal was bad for OKC, unfortunately I think it was a good move. But the move was made because they had the assets to make it happen, not because their GM is a genius.

The Pelicans started the season with 6 NBA caliber players and no draft picks. Hopefully next year we can start the season with 8-9 NBA caliber players and our draft picks and make deals to improve as they become available. And if that does happen it won't be because Joe Dumars is a genius, it will be because it takes time to build a roster and we will have finally gotten to the point where we have assets to spare.

No way, man. The Pelicans failed because they didn't turn Tyreke into two first rounders and Ryno into a starting-caliber 4 and a backup pg.

The drawback of the young vet plan. Nothing wrong with that method, just advantages and disadvantages like every other plan.

Advantage is they're quality players that are young. They can grow and improve as a unit and excel for years. Downfall is acquiring them costs us extremely raw potential. Both results in acquiring assets, one is more handcuffed early on and the other is a risk if the player selected doesn't pan out even into starting caliber.

And flexibility. Young, proven players entering 2nd contracts aren't cheap, as we know well. The Pels were always going to be thin with this approach. I think it's fair to question some of the particular choices (Evans w/ Gordon and Holiday in particular IMO), but that doesn't mean the thought process or logic behind the plan was total nonsense

The shame of it all is that they've had rotten injury luck. Lack of flexibility wouldn't be so debilitating if those core guys could stay on the court. No planning for that.

Or if the pick was #9, they could have had Drummond and Davis. Fate is a fickle bitch

The worst part is, I think Demps and Monty have run out of time when next year looks like they finally should have enough assets accumulated to quiet most of the complaints. If Demps is fired his replacement will be in a good place unless he wants to blow it all up.
