Yeah, Jones is not the best in-game coach. He drives me absolutely nuts more times than not, however, a quick view over the LSU Tigers basketball roster from recent years shows just how far we have come. We have gotten somewhat spoiled actually having a group of players worth a shite. Next year we will have the #1 player in the nation playing for us along with another top 20 player.

To comprehend just how bad we were, here is the roster from two years ago:

Which is actually even better than it was three years ago:

And shite, if we really want to nitpick, here is last year's roster:

Just the fact that we're even close to some of these teams is something that just two years ago would've been a fricking dream. The future is looking so incredibly bright. All we need is some Xs and Os and we're there. I'm as sick of "wait til next year" as anyone, but just to realize that we actually have a reason to be pissed that we lost a game is something we couldn't have said two seasons ago. We are so close. Make it happen, Johnny.

We use our bench less this year than in any of those other years.

Last night when Martin got into foul trouble Jones brought in Bridgewater to play as a plodding 6'4" PF, leaving Mickey as a skinny 6'8" center having a sub-par night. 3 7-footers left on the bench. Instead we get killed in the paint.

This was the most frustrating game of the year to watch. Especially when the best run by LSU was when M&M were on the bench in the first half.

I agree. Dale Brown actually put in time to develop Shaq and Roberts before him. Is there any proof that CJJ has done the same with the 2 7-footers he has?

Take a look how long it's been since LSU has made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

we all realize JJ has improved our talent level (although this year we're not deep).

But that's only half of it. JJ has to actually coach the talent he has and maximize our production on the floor. This is where he's failing.

Three years in and with the players we have, we should make the tournament. The bad losses to lesser teams are what is so infuriating.

Surely this is sarcasm. LSU was picked to finish 2nd to last in the SEC, and ended up even. Only one guy who could play in the post.

Fans need to melt sometimes. It's good therapy and occasionally it's completely called for and prevents the fan base from becoming apathetic.

Can we divide the Rant into the "Fans Who Care Enough to Melt" and "Stuart Smalley, Casper Milktoast" boards? For the latter can there be rainbow and butterfly emoticons?

Terrific. Now go compare those rosters to much of the SEC during that time. Other than UK and UF, no other SEC team is pumping out NBA talent. If LSU were in the ACC or hell, even the Big 12, I might be more inclined to agree that LSU just needs to get more talent before they can compete. Not in the SEC though. Last year was a complete disappointment, and this year is trending in that direction. Do you really think Ole Miss, A&M and even UGA are that much more talented than LSU? Give me a break. Mizzou, AU and MSU sure in the hell aren't.

Right now LSU's recruting class for next season is two VERY good players. But it's likely that they will have to replace 1 maybe 2 of LSU's best players from this team. You minimize the net talent increase when that happens.

Good enough talent to make it to the Final Four? Probably not. Good enough talent so that they shouldn't be scrapping to finish slightly above .500 in weak conference? Absolutely!!!

We've had potential tournament rosters every year with Jones. People act like he's built us to this point, but I still have dissapointment in the previous years. Hamilton and O'Bryant play in the NBA. Not Europe or anywhere else. The NBA. 2 NBA post players and no tourney. Carmouche, Coleman, Hickey, Stringer, and Turner were all legit college basketball players. I think if Turner had stayed it would have been a big difference the past 2 years, same with Hickey for this year.

For this year's team, I thought Robinson was an instant contributor/great recruit. Anyone know the story on him?

Also, I like the potential of Epps. Wish he saw a few more minutes.

Yet we are getting the same results, an NIT team.

People just don't get it. Only ky has more talent in the sec yet lsu is far from the 2nd best team in record. Comparing to previous rosters is pointless. Also, just because jones doesn't play the bench doesn't mean there isn't depth. There is.

True but still dropped a few winnable games. Started 0-4 in conf play IIRC

then it was next year...then next year...now its next year again. These guys need to quit doing this to themselves. No business losing to state, mizzou, aggies twice.

I honestly think Johnny Jones is just a good recruiter and a poor coach. These guys are thoroughly disappointing.

Pretty much what we all expected him to be. His press is hardly effective anymore and that was his wildcard till georgia last yr.

This team should be a lock for a 6-9 seed and instead are nearly off the bubble.

Will prob frick around and miss out on the top 4 and an SECT double bye.

How are old rosters relevant to how we are performing now? We are playing far below our potential now.

This is a great post. The greatest three year period of LSU basketball was 1979 to 1981. The 1978 team had a season much like this year's team. Great performances and some victories against strong teams and then an inexplicable loss to a less talented team at the bottom half of the SEC.

Its all in the process and development, we just have to be patient. The advantage back then was that players rarely left early for the NBA. Johnny Obryant would still be at LSU if the that mindset still existed.

LSU lost only three players to early entry to the NBA from 1976 to 1989

Dewayne Scales Junior year 1980
Ice Reynolds Junior year 1985
John Williams Sophomore year 1986

To compare any team today with the teams of the 80's is down right not apples to apples. If that were the case think about the talent Brady lost to the NBA how good those teams would have been. You may be able to develop a good college bb player, but in this day and time you have to have a couple of pros. Building programs is an NIT trait, to get to the Final Four you have to have some talent. Go back and look at the rosters of the teams in the Final Four, Look at UCLA in 06 along with us, just about every player is playing somewhere making a living. The four year player or the program player better get an education. Every kid wants to play in the league and the second someone says he will get drafted he is gone. Simmons will be one and done, Martin and Mickey I guarantee you have people telling them they can play at the next level. We sweated these two leaving last year, I'll bet one if not both will be gone no matter what we think. Then we are really stuck. Cause we have a one and done coming. This team if it does not make the tourney will be a complete failure with this talent.
