Best way to register a car with out of state title/tags (not in my name)?

My wife was given a car by her father, who lives out of state. The car has out of state tags. The title is in his name and obviously needs to be switched to either her name or mine before we can register it and get FL tags.

But what is the best/easiest way to do this? The DMV site is giving me the run around and last thing I want to do is go to the DMV and try to figure it out on the fly and have to go back again. They were no help on the phone either.

I'm sure it varies by state but can a title be faxed and signed over? I'm thinking probably no, so is a bill of sale the best way to go about it (pretty sure those can be faxed and signed). So I'm thinking have him fill out a bill of sale "gifting" the car to her, and then go from there with the registration and tags.

don't need a bill of sale, he needs to sign the title, give it to her/you and then you can go to the DMV and register

Yes the car will have to be in her name to register it. You are on the right path. Get the bill of sale, get insurance on it, THEN go to the DMV or an auto title place. THe DMV wants proof of insurance for anything now a days.

he needs to sign the title

But does this need to happen in person? That's what I'm wondering.

no, signing a title is like endorsing a check without stating "deposit only" on it, above poster mentioning insurance is correct too

Probably needs to be notarized.

Skip dealing with DMV employees, and find a notary who does auto title work.

I think the title does, but a bill of sale doesn't in FL. Which is why I'm thinking the bill of sale right my be easier since it can also be faxed and signed as well.

I'd love to be able to avoid the DMV but I'm gonna have to register and tag the car there anyways. I wanna do this in one fell swoop if at all possible (not likely).

they don't care about a bill of sale, signed title, insurance is all you need unless there has been a major change since I left, registered several cars from out of state there over a period of years

OK. So just to be clear, we can simply fax him the title, he signs it over to her and faxes it back? It doesn't have to be the original document?

Sorry I don't have much experience doing this kind of thing.

yes, it has to be the original document, if you're in a rush, overnight it and he can do the same, also, I'd recommend going to a smaller town dmv to avoid lines, St. Aug maybe?

Alright thanks man. That really helps. I feel like I was taking crazy pills trying to decypher the DMV's cryptic circular website to figure out what exactly needs to happen, and in what order, to get the car legal.

I hear you, FL is big on rules and red tape but title and proof of insurance is all that I recall needing, I re-registered seven out of state cars there over a few years, good luck

You go to the DMV in Louisiana and Florida to register your car? In Tennessee we go to the County Clerk's office, at least from my recollection. We just bought my wife a car in Texas, and will need to get her TN plates soon

I'm in TX now and you can go to the county clerk/tax assessor's at a court house satellite branch for initial re-register, after that on line or via mail, in FL I went to a small town dmv branch and was able to do it, it's been a few years since I left FL

Doesn't an act of donation need to be done to avoid paying sales tax?
