Yeah...I can't give you any specific insight into FL. I do recall that the title needed to be notarized in TX since the seller wasn't present. We actually had to get a power of attorney too.
I will echo the sentiment that using an auto title place is far better than dealing with the dmv...if those exist in FL.

I sold a used car in TX recently and just signed the title and took the plates off the car. Haven't heard back. Bought a used car a few years ago and the owner just signed the title and I went to the clerk and registered. I know a lot of things are changing due to Homeland Security procedures but I haven't run across that yet.

I did this last year.
He'll need to get his signature notarized in FL. The good news is that (if you're in LA) it'll only cost you $49 for the plates/registration since the car was given as a gift.

Probably isn't applicable in most cases...bought a used car where the son was selling it on behalf of the mother. Even though we had a signed title...that wasn't enough to get it done.

Looks like I can go to a tax collector's office too. Not sure if that will be any better.

it's a pretty streamlined process where I'm at(DFW metroplex,) anything to not go to the dmv
