Great doc told from the Russian team's prospective. To this day they are full of excuses. Cocky frickers.

What excuses? They said they were cocky because they already beat the Americans.

Admitted they weren't ready psychologically for the Americans to be as tough as they were. Their plan to break the Americans psyches the previous game backfired.

Then said how each goal got past them. Took blame for them.

They are filled with a bunch of "what ifs" that you can tell still haunt them.

Meh, I heard:

Lake Placid was crappy.

We were made to live in a prison cell.

Rink was hostile.

Drank champagne the day before.

Tretiak says "If I played the whole game, we win no question."

Didn't take the game seriously.

We beat ourselves.

Blah blah blah.

It was really well done. Loved it.

Well, some of them. That dude that compared us to some random schlub kissing Sophia Loren as the reason why we remember it and it's nothing to them was pretty damn cocky

I don't think you were watching the same show. Thre russians came off as very likeable. Eventhough they were held as prisoners in their own country, they still found love for the game of hockey through their passion for their teammates

Never heard this. heard it was the worst Olympic village they ever had to live in.

quote:

We were made to live in a prison cell.

This is why. It is a prison now. It was designed to be a prison after the Olympics.

Really, quite embarrassing if you ask me.

quote:

Rink was hostile.

it was. But that wasn't a slight.

quote:

Drank champagne the day before.

They did. Like they said, they thought the Americans would be completely demoralized from the previous game. So they were pretty confidant that they could just skate circles around them.

quote:

Tretiak says "If I played the whole game, we win no question."

Hence the "what ifs". They will always wonder about that coaching decision.

quote:

Didn't take the game seriously.

They didn't. Until the end of the second. But by that time it they were more into panic mode than taking it seriously mode.

The end of the first kind of woke them up. But they still believed that they would win. The end of the second put the strings of doubt on them. The last ten minutes was full on panic.

This is why it is called "The Miracle on Ice." Our boys did not belong on the same Ice as them.

That's why Tretiak said, "To beat us, like they did, our team. We were the best team in the world. No one came close. And that is why it is a Miracle."

quote:

We beat ourselves.

They never said this. That is the song of the other evil red state.

Of course the Soviets think they are better: they were. For them, this was one loss in a decades long era of dominance when they won virtually every damn game. I'm sure it stings to have lost, but no one seriously contends the US was the better team. There is a reason we call it a "miracle". It was one.

And I actually enjoyed the cockier players. Be assured of your greatness and don't apologize to nobody. You practically invented modern hockey while the Canadians were still playing goon-style. What I loved most about the doc is how it really showed what artists these guys were, not the automatons we had been taught to believe.

Gotta say, seeing them play the Canadians for the first time, I felt bad for them.

Those Canadian players were straight TPOSs.

It is called the "Miracle On Ice" for a reason. The USA pulled one of the greatest upsets in the history of sports because in every quantifiable measure (except the final score THAT DAY), the Soviet team was a better squad than the USA.

I didn't sense any sour grapes from them. Still mad? Oh yeah. I agree they were cocky - in the sense that they knew, know and will live out their days knowing they were the best team in the world. Just not that night.

Dude's Russian daughter was hot, and their coach was a fool to pull Tretiak after two goals.

Loved it. Didn't think the Russians came off as cocky.

Never knew Fetislov's story of trying to play in the NHL and the miles of political bullshite he had to trek through to make his dream a reality. Gained massive respect for him.

That was a little misleading. Fetisov was not the first Soviet player to sign with the NHL and he wasn't exactly alone in agitating to be able to play in the NHL. When the Soviets finally relented, it was for the entire "Green Unit" including stars Larionov and Makarov. He wasn't fighting on his own, though he was a key figure.

They did give Craig a tip of the cap, but that was it. I liked the story, I appreciate how they made they made the game their own. I loved watching the Russians play in the NHL. They are the reason I followed Detroit through the 90s.

They are still cocky. Professionals that played together for years playing kids, who only just met each other. Pride comes before a fall.

They routinely destroyed nhl allstars. They won damn near every title for 2 decades. They were great.they killed that Canadian team that had 20 hall of fame players (the most decorated team ever,in any sport)

He was the first to be released from that 25 year army contract.

True, they were great. Nothing wrong with being cocky if you back it up, and they routinely did.

They outshot the US 39-16. Yeah, Craig almost single-handedly kept the US in the game. The US trailed for over 30 minutes in the game, and only held a lead in the final 10 minutes after Erruzione's goal. They were outplayed, but they got the breaks. that's the way hockey goes sometimes.

I love the Miracle on Ice, but let's not pretend we were not lucky as hell to beat the Russians. We were. That's kind of what makes it awesome. They play that game 100 times, USSR wins it 99 times. We just happened to get the one.
