I'm not trying to pay $12.95/mo to become a member can I get my one free credit report per year?

You can get a free credit report from each of the bureaus once a year. If you want your real FICO score, which almost all lenders use, you will have to pay for it at MyFico.com. Some credit cards, such as Discover IT and Barclaycard give you a free FICO score every month with your statement. If you want a free monitoring service and a score that may or may not be close to your FICO score, sign up on CreditKarma and CreditSesame.
