The comment, in an interview with Esquire, came after the reporter referenced a “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” quote from Smith’s TV aunt, who advised his character on an episode, “Don’t let success go to your head and failure go to your heart.”

“That was a valuable lesson for me a few years ago with ‘After Earth,'” Smith said. “That was the most painful failure in my career.”

quote:

“‘Wild Wild West’ was less painful than ‘After Earth’ because my son was involved in ‘After Earth,’ and I led him into it. That was excruciating,” the 46-year-old said.

quote:

“I never would have looked at myself in that way. I was a guy who, when I was 15, my girlfriend cheated on me, and I decided that if I was number one, no woman would ever cheat on me. All I have to do is make sure that no one’s ever better than me, and I’ll have the love that my heart yearns for. And I never released that and moved into a mature way of looking at the world and my artistry and love until the failure of ‘After Earth,’ when I had to accept that it’s not a good source of creation.”

Smith said when he received box office numbers the following Monday, he was “devastated for about 24 minutes,” and shortly after, he received a call that his father had cancer. “That put it in perspective — viciously.”

After a 90-minute treadmill session immediately following the news, Smith had an epiphany.

“That Monday started the new phase of my life, a new concept: Only love is going to fill that hole,” Smith said. “You can’t win enough, you can’t have enough money, you can’t succeed enough. There is not enough. The only thing that will ever satiate that existential thirst is love. And I just remember that day I made the shift from wanting to be a winner to wanting to have the most powerful, deep and beautiful relationships I could possibly have.”

Never saw it, but seems to have put some things in perspective for him.

After Earth was painful for us all. Maybe he learned no one likes his son as much as he thinks and we don't want a manufactured star shoved down our throats.

The fact that studios are still hiring M Night Shymalan to direct films is a true phenomenon.

He can make it up to us by agreeing to do Independence Day 2

Until then, I can't forgive him.

Well this is good that he is showing some humility and perspective. Now if his kids, with their ability to control time, write transcendent novels, and under and control the psyche of adolescence, I will be impressed.

Looking at the previews for his upcoming movie where he is a con man, I wonder if he really learned his lesson.

Will Smith has made some good movies, some great movies, and some not so great movies. He seems like a nice guy. I'd have a beer with him.

I would bet on it being garbage. The previews are just slow dramatic shots of Smith and Robbie. Looks like they want to sucker people in with those two and just hope people don't care about the plot

If Robbie gets naked again I will consider the film a success.

Maybe, but I am willing to give it a chance.

I'll wait for reviews to come on the film first.

He's doing the movie with Margot Robbie, I'm sure he had sex with her, that's a success in my eyes.

In all seriousness, it's amazing how this simple fact still evades so many people:
quote:

Only love is going to fill that hole,” Smith said. “You can’t win enough, you can’t have enough money, you can’t succeed enough. There is not enough. The only thing that will ever satiate that existential thirst is love.

well Will you know what this means, don't put Jaden in any movies going forward. It will be tough on all of us, but we'll manage.

That's a good positive message from Will!

He has made some bad decisions with roles. Turning down The Matrix to do Wild Wild West comes to mind.
