Coworker brought this in at 0700, and the beasts I work with had it down in the first 15 minutes....one of them even had two muffins in his hand when he was cutting the king cake.

I'm all for tradition

But when did king cakes become seen as a good tasting dessert? They are all so blah to me
Very bready way too much icing and weird flavoring
King cakes I just don't get anymore
Maybe when in third grade and u brought them to class but no more

I want a Doberge

You've obviously never had a Meche's king cake.

It's literally just a donut.

Eta: I would take a walk in the part with that Oreo king cake

Yeah - Boss went off b/c our Secretary (lowest paid employee) bought a cake, and nobody claimed to get the baby and bring the next one. I need to go pull his scathing email that probably took him 4 hours to prepare.

While I don't like the goopy, overfilled, too sweet king cakes, I'm a sucker for the cooperative tradition of bringing one to share w/coworkers. We've had 10+ cakes this season, all from different bakeries. It's nice that everyone has a favorite and wants to represent his/her favorite bakery/style/filling, etc.

I've never even heard of Caluda's king cake, let alone eaten one. I looked em up online and they look fricking amazing. Are their traditional king cakes really good? How do they compare to Haydel's?

Caluda's is somehow related to the old Coffee Cottage business (used to be on Metairie Rd). The cake itself is a pretty standard sweet dough cake (like Randazzo's)...maybe a bit softer in texture than Haydel's. But Caluda's niche is crazy-ola fillings: bananas foster, creamsicle, oreo, cookie dough, etc. It features a different flavor every week, plus a long list of always-available flavors. Are the filled cakes good? If you like the overfilled danish style cakes--sticky, sweet, soft--then you'll like Caluda's.

Not my favorite. But lots of people enjoy 'em.

We've done the same thing. I especially enjoy trying the different styles.

My favorite this year has been the Pontchartrain from Maurice's(strawberry short cake w/chantilly cream). It's a little too sweet for more than one piece, but it's excellent.
Do you have a favorite?

My favorite of the moment is Gracious Bakery. Real brioche, folded with a whisper thin layer of dark chocolate. Simple, straighforward, and delicious. Not too sweet, overly iced or sugared, and it manages to be pretty without looking like an over-made-up Catholic schoolgirl at her first prom (ahem, Sucre, i'm talking 'bout you).

Thanks a lot for that. Is there a line like Randazzos? Or if I show up on Saturday morning will I be able to get a cake?

There won't be a line, but it's not a high-volume bakery. So you'd best call first to see what time the king cakes are available. On weekdays, they're not out until 9 am or so....but I don't know what time on weekends. LINK /

We had two of these show up on Tuesday. Four Randazzo's showed up yesterday (two traditional & two cream cheese) and also a Maurice's Ponchatoula. This morning two Randazzo's (one pecan praline & one raspberry cream cheese) showed up.

F this place.

For your viewing pleasure

quote:

The tradition of bringing King Cakes (KCs) and the person getting the baby bringing the next (KC) is a long standing one. On several instances, however, someone in OSM has brought a (KC) without anyone identifying they picked the baby. When this happens, it amounts to the same people having to bring the KC.

We are all blessed to have good jobs, working in a good environment and should act like professionals that uphold to a high standard of integrity; not some of the time, but all the time. I know of several people who brought another KC because they received their own baby. But when our Administrative Assistant, who makes less than anyone, brings another KC and we have no one admitting they received the baby, this is truly sad.

I'm sure other honest, kind and considerate individuals will continue bringing KCs, but it doesn't make good sense when we can't play by the same rules. That being the case, you don't have to bring a KC unless you eat one and get the baby. So if you can't follow the KC tradition, please don't eat the KC.

I never though such a memo would be required to be sent to our group, and I can assure you it's extremely disappointing that I would have to do so!

Thanks,
